I just filed a tax return and received the refund. however, i made a mistake saying i was dependent since i thought my name was in my mom's tax return files. however, it's not and if i file as an independent i would get more money. is it too late to file a correction?

Go on the IRS website and find the forms for filing an amended return.

If you used TurboTax, they have the amended return forms on there. I'm sure the other tax preparation software does too.

No, it's not too late to file an amended return. I filed one a year later a few years back.

It is actually a bizarre answer, but if you file the return before the due date (4.15), it is not an amended return...it is actually a 'superseded return'. therefore, filing a regular 1040 with sup receded on the top should work. If you wait until after the due date, a 1040X will be required.

No; you have three years from the due date of the original return. You need Form 1040-X. Get it, and appropriate instructions, from the IRS web site.

No, it's not too late. Fill out a 1040X form to amend your return. You can download the form and instructions at irs.gov
