My husband and I have started a garden, much bigger than what we need, but we intend to give some away to people that will enjoy the vegetables and maybe help someone at the same time. We can't give money to anyone but we can give the food we grow in our garden. We hope to give to several families if it does well.

I grew some gourds too and plan on growing more varieties this year. I enjoy looking out every morning at the garden and watching it grow.

No, but I sure wish I were able to!

I had a small garden before I got sick. I grew small amounts of almost everything....gourds, cabbage, peppers, indian corn....you name it! It was soooo much fun!

I couldn't wait to get out of bed in the mornings, to see what had come up, overnight. lol Yeah, I know a lot of ppl will think I need to get a life.....but, I found it very rewarding.

Plus, I live in the country....what else am I gonna do? lol I also had a little herb garden. I made little wooden stakes for everything, too. It was awesome!

Good for you! If you do not get rotten allergies that make you sneeze while you're doing it!

A vegetable garden summary:
What type of vegetables do you plan to grow? In general, you want a good nutrient rich soil (like manure, regular soil, plus maybe bit of sand for certain vegetables). First of all, rotor till the soil like you see farmers doing every year before they plant their crops. This helps aireate the soil and loosen it up to counter act the effect of leaching from rain. Now, get yourself a good truck and go buy some new soil (like I have mentioned above and spread it down. Re-router -till the soil to mix in your new top soil. Now you have a good base to start with. Once this is done, you need to buy your seeds and determine what type of vegetables you want to grow. As a major rule, remember that Nitrogen (like found in Fish Fertilizer) is good for leafy vegetables like cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and chard. Potassium is good for blooms and vegetables that need to flower before they produce their results (like beans, pumpkins, squash, peas, and so on). Finally, Phosphorous or Boneneal, is important for vegetables that require nutrients for good roots (like Turnips, potatoes, carrots, beets, and so on).
With the new top soil and special fertilizer to spread around each type of particular vegetable, hopefully this helps you produce huge vegetables with proper care and watering. With certain vegetables, like tomatoes, you may also need to purchase certain fungicides or pesticides too because of caterpillars, aphids, blight and other things! Copper Spray is good for protecting tomatoes, Seven Dust is good for getting rid of aphids on cabbage an other leafy vegetables, and diazinon is good for a general purpose insecticide. If you do not like chemicals, there are special soap sprays that you can ask your garden shop or nursery retailer about to help you out too!

You should feel proud. I would like to do something like that in the future. Keep up the good work.
