Many talk about there being no proof for the existence or the non-existence of God, but this is not the case for every atheist I am sure.
For some, yes, I grant you that there is the need for proof, but what how much evil there is, God's apparent ''uninvolvement'' with us? Since he supposedly created us, has he ever been there for us, and before anyone slams that against me ask yourself, can you REALLY prove that what happened in the Bible is the truth? Also, see scepticism and narrow-mindedness.
There are many more reasons I am sure, why an atheist believes that there is no God but what it all comes down to is choice.

Look at the world folks. Yeah there's good and beauty in it, but there's also war, famine, disease and cr@p. Some guy in NY even puched a 100+ year old lady in the face the other day while he mugged her.
God loves us? yeah right. If there is a god, he is one sick motherf****r!
I'm an atheist; if I'm wrong then I'll happily burn in hell for all eternity; I am not worshipping a deity that treats his creation with such contempt.

Because there is no single strand of proof that such a paranormal entity exists. It is a man-made invention, as have been all the preceding gods (and goddesses) in our history.
Simple application of logic and reason - and common sense - tells us that all religion is sheer rubbish. Research into our history shows us clearly that religion is a failing of mankind to accept reality - some of us are clearly very afraid to do so.
This current god myth is gradually being eroded by education.
However, in some countries, religious dogma is compulsory for young children and so it is perpetuated.
Please stop doing that. It is evidently very very silly to implant lies into impressionable minds. It will 'spoil' their lives unless they are fortunate enough to have more intelligence than their parents and come to see through all the ridiculous BS in time.
Incidentally, by accident, I voted 'Good Answer' to one reply above, when it evidently was not, and can't correct it. Is this possible?

in the past, people have been so sure that there were many gods. they needed an explanation for everything, but as time passed, science began to answer many questions....we are still young as a species, and of course there is no way we can answer every question out there yet, but with time, everything will be and there wont be a need for god anymore....people just use the idea of god for hope and thats great, but just dont shove your ideas down the throats of others who might be a bit skeptical

I only believe in one less of the thousands of gods that exist throughout the worlds religions today. What makes believers so sure that the other thousands of gods don't exist?

The lack of evidence. I would think that after the thousands of years that life has existed on this planet, surely he would of made contact by now and be more pro-active with his alleged creation. If I made something then i would look after it a lot better.

I'm atheist and I think it would be wonderful to believe in God however I just can't trick myself into having faith that it does exist. I've never seen any proof that it exists. The only thing I know for sure is that dead means dead. No coming back. No magical place, No horrible place just darkness and non existence for ever and ever. Believing would be so much better than knowing this, But still I just can't do it.

The same reason why most of the sane population of the world is sure that there are no such thing as faeries, werewolves, vampires, or Santa Claus.
The lack of evidence proves that there are no such beings. Therefore, according to the policy of deciding whether scientific theories are valid (there must be some kind of evidence proving them before validity is even considered), there is no God.

No evidence - in fact all the evidence points to there being no god
no reason for his existence - the slightest application of Occam's razor completely wipes out the need for any supernatural beings

The same thing that makes anybody playing hide-and-seek and calling 'allie allie incomefree' and having nobody come back to Base, realize that nobody was actually playing hide-and-seek with them after all..
It's called empirical data.
Until empiricists receive enough data otherwise to cause them to be disinclined to continue in their beliefs, they continue believing what their previous data has told them.
