I think it is obscene to charge that for a mixed breed. I could not believe my eyes when I saw this at most of the goldendoodle sites. How can they charge, so much when on the sites they cant guarentee how each dog will look when born, not too mention the problems listed with bones/joints! On one site the lady said you can not meet the puppy in person until it is paid for then, claimed it was becuase of those yorkies being stolen!

4,500 dollars is outrageous for any dog , I paid that for a horse once but never a dog let alone a mixed /designer dog .Next NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER BUY a dog from someone who ll not let you inspect their breeding / home practices usually that means their a puppy mill . Now as for the women claiming that her yorkies are being stolen It does happen but again if she scared of people she shouldnt be selling puppies ask her to arrange a time when other people in her family can be there to protect her and her pups ,But again if she wont NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER buy from someone who would let you inspect theeir home /breeding practices

Yes, way too much.

A Golden Retriever / Poodle mix is just that - a mix. A mutt. There are thousands upon thousands of them at shelters and in rescues that need homes because they are the results of unwanted matings or bad backyard breeders.

People are trying to sell them for big money as Goldendoodles and what not, but those are NOT breeds. They are mixes of purebred dogs and should not be bred in the first place, let alone being sold for outrageous amounts of money.

You need to find a different breeder. I have heard of people paying 12 to 15 hundred before but that is for a pure breed dog, not a mix. No mixed dog can be a show dog so their is no reason to pay that amount of $$$. Furthermore, how can you not see the dog untill it is paid for. That is obserd. If you want a Golden-doodle, look for someone who only breeds those animals, and who will let you see the litter before you decide or pay. Shelters and resques are a great option to and usually under $100.

The dog you speak of is a "labradoodle". They were created in Australia a few years ago as excellent working dogs, for the blind, etc etc. And they are hypoallergenic. They seemed to pick up the best of both breeds and not the worst.
THAT was in the beginning but they NEVER cost that much.

Then they got fancy and began breeding mini poodles and labs and it got silly with mixed results.

We mated our prize stud poodle to a very nice lab as a favour to a friend. She sold the pups, smashing puppies all, for what I considered to be robbery at $700 for mutts. Now, I must say, I recognize this litter years later because they so resemble our guy Howard. But Still way too much.

I have been a dog fan all my life. I remember when a mutt was a mutt and a registered was a registered. All dogs had merits it was a matter of choice. Now.. cockapoos, Peadles, havashitz (YES havanese/shitzu LOL). labradoodles, it is ridiculous.

These people are often backyard breeders. Or just out to make a buck. You either pay the bucks for a pedigree if that is your choice or you buy a mutt. That is not a value judgement, a good dog is a good dog, papers or not.

Once we sold an exquisite pair of apricot/silver/honey poodle puppies for $3500, but that was two of the finest animals around. We normally go for $1000 to $1500 but that's ok too. We are very cautious about where our pups go.

$4500 is beyond ridiculous for any animal . Even a top breeder.

Yes, it sounds like too much to me.

I was looking around and they were more in the $800 to $2,000 range. I don't think those prices are too high. Yes, it is a mixed breed, but it is coming from very specific parents as an F1... if it is an F2 then it is even more rare. You would want the parents tested for the problems with bones and joints though...... you are right about that.

For a (non-puppy mill) breeder of healthy Goldendoodles... I would pay in that range. If I wanted one.

Whomever thought of breeding these to dogs together to make a "designer breed" as they call it should be shot. Goldens have an under coat and poodles dont shed. Put them together and you get a non-shedding dog with an undercoat. I feel sorry for these dogs because most people do not know how to groom them properly and they get really matted close to the skin. I am a dog groomer and I cringe when I make an appointment for one. I wouldnt pay $2 for one.

They are really nice dogs, I think all dogs should be expensive because it stops impulse buying. It is a lot (if its US dollars) they should know about the joints ect, this is one of the reasons some breeds are so expensive, it costs a lot for vets to do xrays and check the breeding stock.
You should always see a puppy before purchase, I can understand someone not wanting people to come to thier house as they could come back and break in, but they should be able to meet somewhere. A vet can verifiy if the animals exist so check out the vets in the breeders area, they will also be able to recommend certain breeders or answer questions about breed health.

If people are stupid enough to pay that much for a mixed breed that they could get for $50 at any humane society in the counrty some one is going to sell them for that.
I hate that people spend that much money on dogs.
Especially whan they could get one at the shelter and save a life.

1/2 of $4500 is still an obscene price for a mutt. $50 is a fair price, the dogs can't be registered, and you have no guarantees to anything at all.. Best that they quit breeding mutts and adding to pet over population, rather than trying to get rich by breeding mutts... Wish people would quit falling for this stuff..

That's highway robbery!! Yesterday, we went to 5 area shelters and were willing to pay the $80 for the adoption fee, but wound up getting a lab mix from an individual for free. We also went by a pet store, and I couldn't believe they wanted $699 for a toy chihuahua. That's outrageous enough!
