I want to Increase my metabolism because i used to be a cross country runner and stopped and i gained 20 pounds. Now I want to run every day long distance like I used to but I heard that I won't increase my metabolism instead it will make me gain more weight. I don't like lifting weights, all i want to do is run. So I have been running for the past 2 weeks for 45 minutes, 3.5 miles, 480 calories. Will this make my body stay the same? Can I run for an hour or an hour and thirty minutes or is that too much?

Almost ANY exercise you do will be better than none. If you want to optimize your weight loss, keep your heartbeat within a narrow range, probably no higher than 140-150 bpm. Too high and your body will go into fat "saving" mode, too low and you might as well have afternoon tea.

Secondly, when you do burn 500 calories during a run, keep in mind that's not all you burn. Our bodies are in overdrive SEVERAL HOURS after we exercise, and that is also additional calories that are burned. This is why people often underestimate the benefits of exercise.

Thirdly, try to switch out of aerobic exercise every other day and do weight training. Muscle mass burns about twice as many calories per kg than fat, so the more fat you replace with protein, the more you burn just by doing nothing.

Finally, eat not one huge meal, but many small meals. It's like throwing smal lumps of coal in the fire very often, rather than a huge lump every few hours. This keeps your metabolism revved up.

So do 3 things:
1. Go to about 70-80% of your max heart rate, I'd say in the 140-150 beats per minute. That is, don't overdo it, don't underdo it.
2. Alternate with weight bearing exercises to build muscle mass.
3. Eat many small meals to keep your metabolism running high.

You'll be fine. It seems to me you are already probably doing lots of aerobic exercise. Just add some weight-bearing reps.

Your body will only store fat, if it feels stressed out and needs an extra energy fuel. Just by running, you already increase your body's health, so kudos for that. Lifting weights, although it can cause weight gain in the form muscle is something you should look into. It not only tones, but activates muscles in a different way and can reduce wear and tear on your muscles and protect bone mass. A balanced workout will help you more than just running alone.

45 minutes or whatever your body can take is certainly healthy. Work your way up. It will increase your energy and definitely increase the healthiness of your lifestyle. Weight loss is from a deficit of calories, not by increasing your metabolism. Also a majority of calories are lost by heat, not by working out. Try working out in the cold or swim in cooler water, if weight loss is your main gain.

Every long distance runner I have ever seen is very lean. So running by itself does not cause fat retention. Starving yourself does. You didn't gain the weight overnight you are not going to loose it overnight. Be sensible about your diet, and either way running will make you more fit and probably leaner.

Hey, I read that too. Something about running consistently makes your body store fat.. But it doesn't seem like it, because people who run a lot don't seem to get fat. So I don't think it's a very big deal...

Your body will start storing food as fat if you starve yourself, not from running. If you dont eat, your body thinks that it is getting no food ever, so when you actually do eat... it stores that food as fat, that is why it is more healthy to eat more small meals than three big meals.
