My cat hind leg is a little swollen and it hurts when it is touched. Now this happened 2 weeks ago, he was limping and it hurted, but then it went away, and it seemed like he was fine. i had him stay inside for 2 weeks and he was perfectly fine. now today he started limping again and it's swollen. He had just come back in from outside. does he have a sprain foot? why did it go away and then come back? I'm a college student, so i don't have too much money. Is there anything i should check to see if it is very serious

Please, take him to the vet asap.... there is no way of telling what is causing this. It can be a sprained leg, an injured tendon, a fractured bone, a scorpion or spider bite, a cat bite abscess, even cutaneous migrans of some parasites. No way of telling without looking at the cat.

Cat Swollen Leg

Look, I know you are strapped for cash as a student. But your cat is in urgent need of vet care. If the swelling in the leg is due to an abscess, then all that is needed is for vet to drain pus and give a course of antibiotics. But if the swelling is due to a fracture, again it may not cost you too much - antibiotics and the vet will try to immobilze the leg for it to heal properly (and total bed rest for the cat). Do you have a cat carrier? I suggest to confine your cat inside it so that the cat will not further injure the leg.

I am sure you can borrow a couple of hundred dollars from somewhere. This is what being a cat guardian is about. The cat is DEPENDING on you to help him. Please don't let him down.

It sounds like it could be an infection from a bite several weeks ago. His immune system was able to fight off the infection for a while so it seemed to clear up. Now it is back because the infection is deep within his body. You really have no other recourse than to have a vet give an antibiotic prescription to clear it up. You should not delay in doing this so you must find the $$ somehow as it could be very serious, damage his kidneys irrevocably etc. You need to act right away.

Perhaps it is an infected paw or leg so even though you don't have much money I think the cat needs to see a vet. You can check and see if the leg has and open wounds or sore spots and then points these areas out to the vet
Good luck
Hope the cat gets feeling better...

You find the money from someone, beg, borrow and steal. Take your cat to the vet. Your cat is not healthy. Its sufferring. The risk of owning an "outside" cat is that exactly. You need to be a responsible pet owner and keep up with his shots as well. Because you let your cat outside...anything can happen to it. May of been hit by a car, or a person. I once caught a young boy BOWLING a cat onto a busy street. You cannot trust strangers to care about your cat as it wanders the streets (limping).

I would advise taking your cat to the vet to get him looked at. Since you say it seemed to go away for a while and then came back, it sounds to me that it may be an infection of some kind in his leg. Perhaps it simply flaired back up again. Did your cat possibly get bitten by another animal, or get cut? Does it feel warm to the touch?(this is a sign of infection). It also could be a bone fracture. It is impossible to say though without having a professional take a look at it. He may have to take xrays.

Your cat probably got into a cat fight and was bitten in the leg by another cat and now it has become infected and is probably abscessed. The swelling may be the pus that the leg has filled up with. Sounds like you will need to get him to a vet as it is not going to go away on its own.

Ask around to find if your area has a low-cost wellness clinic for animals. Do you have a Humane Society or SPCA in your area? Definitely get your cat seen by a vet soon. He may be reinjuring his leg.

Have you checked for bite wounds? He may need a round of antibiotics.

Swollen is not a good sign. You should really go take him to a vet. Is his foot at all hot? If so you MUST take him to a vet. It could be infected. A vet can treat him and possibly splint the foot so that he cannot injure himself further. Can you work out a payment plan with the vet? If not, call your local ASPCA and explain your situation. Maybe they can refer you to a vet who can help you for free or for very little money.
