I'd say if they had the will power, Japan and Germany.
Sure, they don't have the physical arms right now, but if provoked I think these countries could easily come up with what would be necessary to obliterate the U.S.
Strangely, I don't see Russia as ever being a threat. They're the opposite where they have the arms, but I can't see any will power there.

Mary O,
Let's not live in the past. I'm talking present-day. It really doesn't matter that Japan and Germany were defeated in WW2.

Jeff, What you write is truth. Although Canada has no real military, it doesn't need it. The U.S. has long been making assumptions about Canada being a big ally, but we all know that Canadians have no use in being allied with a country as stupid as to have Bush as a leader. Perhaps things will change after the next election, but it's really not about leaders, it's about the people themselves who allow extremely poor, extremely irresponsible leaders to lead. The U.S. continually downplays Canada's strong connections to just about every country in the world.

Orion,
You obviously have not heard the Biblical story of David and Golliath.
Perhaps you've never heard of the Spanish Armada or the original Kamikaze (I'm talking way before airplanes existed).
Or how about the miracle of loaves and fish?
Things happen, mate. When will power and just the way the universe unfolds happens, you get surprises, especially when it comes to war.
Have you ever heard of Ghandi?
No?

I doubt it sincerely.
Let's say that the US decided to just go right out and piss off the Germans and the Japanese.
Um...And what would they do about it?
Where do you think either nation could come up with the money, people, will-power, and manufacturing potential to build the weapons necessary to defeat the US?
Where do you think they could come up with the experience to defeat the most combat-experienced arms on the planet?
Where do you think they could come up with the blue-water Navy, Air-Superiority fighters, AWACs, Submarines, and other technologies needed to ensure the safety of their troopers in transit and in the battlespace? Where do you think they could come up with the Airlift, Sealift, and Logistics capability?
I think it's comical that you see the will-power in the Germans and Japanese who have spent the last 50 years trying their darndest to exterminate any sense of nationalism or fighting spirit out of their people. They -thankfully - have failed and there are still LOTS of patriotic Germans and Japanese who have the warrior spirit, but they cannot approach the manpower of the US Military.
The Germans currenlty have 60,000 men under arms.
The US has over 1.5 million.
See the problem? How long would the US sit still and let the Germans and Japanese build up the infrastructure, training, manpower, weapons systems, logistical tail, technology, and everything else that goes into a world-class military machine?
The biggest threat we currently face is from China. They are positioning themselves to take us on - particularly over Taiwan and they're doing a VERY good job of it. They are planning for this battle and preparing for it on a daily basis. They know their Sun Tzu. You'll know when they're certain they can win in Taiwan - and we are too - because that'll be when they move.
EDIT: For those above - China just tested an ASAT system, their J-10 fighter is a fifth-generation fighter on a par with the Eurofighter Typhoon, they're building Soviet AAMs that have a larger employment envelope than our AMRAAM, and they're buliding up their Navy as well. They cannot currently defeat us in a large-scale conflict, but that's not what their aim is right now. They'll head that direction slowly and look to defeat us regionally first. THAT is what they are preparing to do.
Canada? Are you kidding? You don't even let your people have guns. What will they fight us with? Hockey sticks? The entire Canadian Military is smaller than the US Marine's logistics troops. The Princess Patricia's Light Infantry is a very fine unit - but they're pretty much all you have. And how did you treat them? We wanted to give them medals for their performance in Afghanistan. YOU guys put them on trial. Not a lot of threat there.
Israel? Please. North Korea? Even sillier. Afghanistan? Suurrreeee. What HAVE you been smoking?
There is ONE country on Earth that can defeat the United States of America - The USA itself. The Liberals are doing their very, very best to do just that. So, if that's your goal, Vote Defeat! Vote Democrat!
Orion
EDIT2: *sighs* Okay, let's start dealing with your additional comments, as silly as they are.
I'm almost done with my third degree(First two are in BS Engineering and then a Masters in Education) - this time in Philosophy. Of course I've heard of David & Goliath. Things are a bit different between two people armed with hand-weapons and millions of soldiers with high-tech systems and weapons. To modify your analogy, let's put David where he was, only this time Goliath is still in town while thousands of Hawks, Eagles, and Falcons are ripping David to shreds at the same time as Moles, Groundhogs and Shrews are devouring his feet and he's had no food for a month. Goliath shows up, sees the bloody bits of what was David, picks up his sling-shot and goes and has a drink.
Spanish Armada? Yes, farily familiar with that one. Again, a slightly different situation, to be sure. Same with both the 'original' Kamikaze and the more modern version. You'll recall the modern version failed. This is the problem with using historical analogies as a base to build modern strategies and tactics.
Yes, miracles happen. Thermopylae, Taffy 3, Bastogne, warfare is full of courageous stands where heroic action, valor, and superhuman courage made the difference between victory and defeat. But they stand out because they ARE rare.
The Spartans were slaughtered. Taffy 3 took massive casualties, the 101st held out until superior American arms could be brought to bear and so on - None of these situations are parallel to your question. The military history of the United States is replete with examples like this, Chosin, Bunker Hill, Pusan, Khe San, 73 Easting, Bastogne, and so on.
Ghandi? Yes, I'm quite familiar with Ghandi. He was able to succeed because the British are a humane nation. Let me ask you how well Ghandi would've done in, say, China? Or Cambodia? We'd not know his name because he would've been jailed and tortured to death quite quickly.
You asked what countries COULD defeat the US - You did not specify "What countires could defeat the US with miraculous help from the Gods" - In which case, the answer is "all of them." If you want a straight military analysis, there is no single country on Earth that could hope to defeat the US in combat. Not now, not within the next five years. In fact, we could quite probably defeat the combined arms of the entire planet. It would be horrific with massive casualties on all sides and incredible destruction, but I have little doubt that the US would come out on top.
We simply have too many advantages in too many areas.

China just has no point for taking out the U.S. and still lacks the organization and military technology to do so, Japan is out because it is considered one of the United States' main allies, Russia is still screwed up from the collapse of the S.U., and Germany is incapable of fighting a full scale war anymore, and Iran's military is a joke with low-tech missiles as a fun add-on.
My guess is the nation really capable of seriously harming the United States would be France because of its nuclear inventory, but even then it could not take out the U.S., so the only force that could actually achieve this would be the European Union. Though, Mexico might be able to kill us by adding their debt to ours xD
By the way Jeffrey we won that war >_>

the US dont need any specific country or continent to beat them for they are already defeated bye the leaders. by the leaders conduct and beliefs you need not milatary skill or power just the mental abuse tactics which the terrorist cry does to the many americans mentality the fear of the unknown also plays a part and the small hit and run tactics are powerful so you see the us is already kicking their own behinds!

Israel - they are fighting the most covert guerilla war against the US in the history of organized warfare. After seeing the US leave Vietnam in shame due to the Viet Cong using bicycles to transport supplies to the jungles, Israel declared a secret war against the US in order to weaken the US and allow other nations to use resources that the US were using.

after WWII we had both japan & germany write it in their constitution that they were not allowed to have a standing army they have reseve units thats it , china has the worlds largest army but they are extremely outdated, also look how we r geographically positioned with 2 big oceans and cnanda to our north who is our #1 ally mexico to the south whose army would be crushed like an insect noone can come anywhere close to beating us in a war we would destroy the planet before that ever happened what we r fighting in iraq is not a war its an insurgency that is supposed to wear & grind us down over time

US CANADIANS WOULD GIVE YOU A RUN FOR YOUR MONEY. WE MIGHT NOT HAVE THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY, BUT WE WOULD SEND YOU HOME PACKING AGAIN. REMEMBER THE WAR OF 1812? BESIDES, YOU WOULD HAVE TO FIGHT MORE THAN JUST OUR MILITARY. WE WOULD ALL BE GUNNING FOR YOU. MEN....WOMEN....CHILDREN....SOLDIERS....EVERYONE!!
no guns in Canada? do some reasearch. we have few handguns, but rifles/shotguns, we rival texas per capita!
thouhgt of something else. were the U.S. ever to attack Canada, do you really think our allies around the world(it's a very, VERY long list)would sit by and let this happen? i think not. and i bet more than a few of your own countrymen would quickly cross the border and come to our aid. sorry, but it's true.
