In a nutshell...
The Cold War was basically a massive arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States. This was the same era in which nuclear proliferation became a household term.
After years of both nations developing new and more advanced weapons, technology, and other tools of war, the Soviet Union's economy eventually collapsed, as it was unable to keep up the financial burden of what it was building versus actually having the funds to pay for it, thus the United States "won" the Cold War.

The cold war was not won or lost it simply ended because the USSR was unable to finance the continuation of there republic.
In many respect the break up of the USSR has resulted in greater world insecurity than at the hight of the cold war.

In a nutshell nobody won the cold war.. Talking,a thing called communicating with each other sorted the problem out.. every body has their own right to an opinion even if other countries dont agree to it..and dont take me wrong i am not talking or even suggesting about anywhere Else on this planet just about the cold war..Who gives one country the right to police the world,it should be a community thing (eg) all countries and not just 1 or 2..

The Cold War was not won by anybody.
The broad idea of it is that the Soviet Union decided that it was better to not continue acting in the way that it had been through the rest of the Cold War.
It decided that if the states that constituted the USSR did not want to be a part of it anymore then that was OK. It decided that the world being on the brink of nuclear destruction all day everyday was not such a crash hot idea.

The cold war was not won, it simply discontinued as political systems decayed (communism) and societies developed.

It was not only the burden of the new arms race that Reagan had initiated, but also because of the costly invasion of Afghanistan, which sapped the USSR's morale and strained its economy, and Gorbachev's policies (Glastnost and Perestroika). Gorbachev tried to open up the economy, tried to introduce freedom of speech etc. When he declared that the Communist Bloc was free to choose its destiny, without fear of Soviet invasion (e.g. Prague Spring in '68), many of them overthrew one party communist rule. This spurred on the independence movements in various Soviet republics like Lithuania which eventually led to them declaring independence and thus the collapse of the USSR. There's a lot more to it...

It started with the leader of the Polish labor union Lech WaÅÄsa, leading the Solidarity union to a strike in Poland. The Pope supported Walesa and the union which gave the union more authority to go on strike against the old soviet union. This led to the Polish government breaking away from the USSR. Another pressure was US president Ronald Reagan who escalated weapons and placed missiles in Europe. The USSR tried to keep up militarily and this broke the government to pay such a high price for weapons. The USSR began to weaken as Poland and other USSR republics began to break away. Reagan took a trip to Western Germany and told the people to tear down the Berlin wall which separated West from East Germany. It was nopt long after that people began to actually tear the wall down and united Germany. All the previous USSR republics broke up and became their own countries and Germany reunited after 50 years of separation.

why do you think it was won? Is the US now in control of Russia???
Don't believe the hype, they're still a huge world power and the U.S are still filling their fuel tanks with petrol from Russia (and they don't even know it).
Funny how they both went to war in Afghanistan and yet have (apparently) opposite philosophies. Couldn't have anything to do with that oil pipeline into Europe...?

basically President Regan convinced the soviet union that we had developed a missile defense system that could shoot down any weapon they could throw at us, then he put nukes in Europe, the liberals screamed like little pigs that he was going to put us in nuclear war. the soviets tried to outspend us and put themselves into the poor house. this is it in a nut shell but like always the liberals are on the wrong side of history.

The Soviet Union was bankrupted. The natives didn't care about the USA when they were unable to feed their families or heat their homes.
