The torah is the first 5 books, supposedly written by Moses. They are what are in the scrolls that reside in the arc. The Talmud is a compliation of commentary and interpertation of the Torah, and dates from centuries later, about 200 c.e.. So the Torah is the book that we hold as the holiest book. That is why it is wrapped in scrolls, usually handwritten and kept in an arc and brought out for occassions.

The Talmud is a book of Jewish civil and religious laws and ethical lore, distinct from the Pentateuch (first 5 books of the OT). It is made up of 63 books. The laws of the Talmud originally came from early oral laws. After Rome destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70, the Pharisees and other pious scholars zealously put the oral laws into writing. The Sadducees did not agree with the Talmud, insisting that only the Pentateuch need be observed. I believe that's because the Pharisees decided that the Torah needed to be deeply interpreted in order to adapt it to daily life. I would think that it's looked at this way: Talmud=man made; Torah=God inspired. Which is probably where the dissension came from between the two ruling authorities of Judaism.

Torah is the Hebrew name for the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy).

That's a very brief description of each. I believe you would have to get a Jewish person's opinion to find out which they consider most sacred or holy. My feeling is it would depend a lot on whether one was a practicing Orthodox Jew or not.

Have a great day.

Originally, there were two Torahs. The Torah as we know it today is the first 5 books of the Jewish Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy--in no particular order). The Jewish Bible is called the TaNaKh. It is an anagram for Torah, Nevi'im (Prophets) and Ketuv'im (Writings). The Torah, the first five books of the Tanakh, is the Written Torah. When G-d gave the Torah to Moses at Sinai, He gave both a Written and Oral Torah. The Oral Torah was taught by word of mouth for centuries until it was finally written down in a book called the Mishneh. Commentaries on the Mishneh were written down in a book called the Gemara. Together, these books are called the Talmud. The Talmud is both the Word of G-d (Oral Torah written down) and the rabbis commentary on it. Each in its own way, they are equally holy. But, the Torah seems to be more so, for if a Torah ever falls to the ground, you must fast. If a Talmud does, you don't have to. So to recap:

-Torah is first five books of the Tanakh
-Talmud is Oral Torah and commentaries put together
-Both are equally holy in certain situations but if you had to choose right now, it would probably be Torah.

Good question, and peace.

RE:
What's the difference between the Torah and the Talmud, and which is considered the "holiest" book of Judaism?

the torah is the "holiest" book of Judaism. it is the first out of three parts of the old testament- on which judaism is built.

The talmud as far as I know, Is a collection of thoughts- rules and explanations- and lessons- the "wise" said, and taught, using the torah. and interpetations of the torah and the rest of the Old Testament
