whenever cats get playful and start rough housing or running like nuts through the house, their pupils are really dilated.. why?

Their pupils dilate to allow in more light from more sources so they can see better. Cats eyes pick up light source from the smaallest thing, which enables them to see in the dark. So when they get playful (which is really hunt mode), their eyes dilate to make sure they can see better so they pounce when the time is right.

Cats are hunters by nauture, and its said that a normal healthy cat will "mimic" ths hunting behavior many times a day. The hyper attacks that cats will sometime get. That is no more than just excessive enegry. Much like us when we sit around idle and then get negative enegry, this is the same as what your kitty is experiencing. You can try to make or buy some of the toys that are on a stick with the string and toy dangling from the stick. This is a great way to play with ur cat and help him/her burn off some of that excessive energy.
The pupils, cats eyes need less light refraction than do a humans. This I also believe if I am correct goes back to the hunting behavior and is merely aaan expression of focus and concentration and the light refraction. I think it is 1/6 of the light that a cat needs to see as a human does in normal lighting conditions.

I even have heard that every person organic black cats have Siamese in them...and that i think it particularly is authentic, on account that many black shorthair cats have an oriental seem to them (slender tail and face, long legs, and so on.) If she is a shorthair, she's probable no longer an Angora combination, as they have exptionally long, silky fur. yet something's available! Congratulations on having this type of gorgeous puppy :)

My friend has a Siamese and her blue eyes turn completely black when she's ready to play.I think it's a cross between adrenalin rush (I suspect that because usually when she plays her tail puff's up very impressively and her fur raises) and hunter instincts locking onto a target and focusing the distance needed to travel.
It's when those black eyes start glowing red that I start to worry it usually means, she's got a little too excited and someone is going to be bitten.

pupils only dialate in the dark.. they retract in the light. Also, drug stimulants like amphetamines or cocaine can cause one's pupils to dialate. But I highly doubt cats get high.

The cat ur talking about was probably not looking into a light
