If you are a US citizen, you do not need a visa to travel to Canada, but a passport is now required.
If you are a citizen of a different country, but living in the US, you may need a visa, depending on where you are originally from. Check with the Canadian embassy specifically what is needed.

You do not need a visa... you may need a passport though. If you are travelling by AIR.. read below.
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
If you are driving to canada -- make sure to take your license and your birth certificate if you do not have a passport!

There are lots of countries that we do not need Visas to travel into yet, Going to aother country you need to follow thier rules on what they require to enter and stay. Canada is not a country you need a visa to visit. Yet, since 9/11 we are not required to have a passport to reenter the U.S. from any other country. This also means Kids, and babies also need them.

while you're a US citizen, you do no longer pick a visa to journey to Canada, whether a passport is now required. while you're a citizen of one different united states of america, yet residing interior the U. S., you additionally can pick a visa, based on the situation you would be initially from. examine with the Canadian embassy often what's needed.

Visa - as a tourist - no. Photo ID is sufficient (like a driver's license).
However, US 'Homeland Security' (Customs) require a valid passport for US citizens to re-enter the USA by air.... and by land in another year.

Not necessarily, you will either need a passport if traveling by air...or just a picture i.d (such as a license) along with your birth certificate if you traveling by land (car, bus, train). At this time a passport is not necessary unless you are traveling by air. See the government Canadian website below as well as the American Government's.
Take care.
