I think basic Japanese is quite easy but if you are really interested to continue learning....is better if you could apply courses for Japanese language and ask the Teachers to teach you...(any on newspapers)
so you won't learn the wrong thing.
Also if is possible to try speaking it to friends or any Japanese friend (if have). you'll know how much have you learned. ^^

if you want to learn writing, search for how to learn katakana, hiragana and kanji.
but the best way is to buy japanese lessons in books with tapes.
written japanese may sound different with spoken japanese.
