I had a dog who was the same way. One flea bite and she'd break out and just chew her fur off. It drove her nuts. You just have to be really diligent and keep the fleas off your dog. I'd recommend using Frontline Plus. My vet also recommended a special shampoo and I'm sorry. It's been a few years and I can't recall the name but talk to your vet. Maybe he or she can recommend something. Good Luck!

This is also known as flea dermatitis. Its basically a reaction to fleas. If your dog is infested with fleas or your dog has oily skin or is very dirty, this also worsens the condition. First shampoo your dog with a good flea shampoo such as Tropiclean "Neem" shampoo and then get a dose of "Advantage" from your vet. If you have other pets you will want to treat them to. This works for 30 days and kills all live fleas within 12 hours. Since the flea cycle is alot shorter than 30 days any eggs that hatch in that time frame will also die and you will be rid of fleas as long as your dog or other pets do not come into contact with fleas again.

The dogs are actually allergic to the saliva of the fleas when they bite the dog.
Just keep him flea free and that should help him out greatly.
On line at Dr's.Foster's&Smith the have a great product call Itch releif . It comes in a spray and shampoo. I think it's great. Really releives the itching on the dogs skin.
Good Luck hope your husband is feeling much better.

Yes .. When I had Sheppard's years ago... they were allergic to fleas..I couldn't give them anything because the flea had to bite them before it would die and by then it was to late. I had a heck of a time. Some times a itch shot would help, but it was an on going thing. At least during the winter they had relief. So yes they can be allergic to flea's . That was many years ago.. they might have came up with something to help your dog. I hope so.

Allergies develop after an exposure to something. You could eat something your whole life, then suddenly become allergic to it, or first time you encounter it, you could develop an allergy to it.
Basically you have to get rid of the fleas, no fleas, no bites, no allergic reaction.

It can happen and if you have a dog who happens to have flea allergies it is very important that you are very careful to prevent them from getting fleas.
Using something like Frontline or one of the other flea preventatives on a regular basis will help and if they are exposed to flea they will not become infested with them.
Keep your dog on a flea preventative and your problems should not get to bad.

My sister's pit bull is allergic to fleas. She has to be sure that she keeps flea treatment on her every month like clockwork.

Yes I was told my American Pit Bull Terrier is. The vet said he can only have one and it could irritate the fire out of him(doesn't have to be "covered" in them to be annoyed).
