Most species alive today, both marine and terrestrial, still don't have common names. Just those familiar to a large number of people have common names. The majority of animal species just have scientific names. No doubt early mankind likewise had names for those animals they commonly saw. It was neither necessary nor possible to have names for the many species they were not even aware of.
