The shafts will depend on your swing speed, the faster your swing speed the stiffer the shaft, that's why you see a lot of seniors with graphite, they can get more flex out of them. But graphite can also come in stiff and extra stiff, so if you want graphite for weight reasons go for it. Go to a good pro shop or golf shop and they will test your swing speed for you and advise you better on the shaft you should be using.

Chuck P has it right. The shaft flex is the measurement of the shaft's ability to bend during the swing (note that shaft flexes can vary from one club manufacturer to another, so a regular shaft by one company may not be the same another company's). A stiff shaft will not bend as easily as a regular shaft, in both steel and graphite (graphite is not more flexible, just lighter). The purpose of flex is to bring the clubhead squarely facing the target at impact. If a shaft is too flexible, it will cause the clubhead to impact in a closed or open and more lofted position. If a shaft is too stiff, it will cause the clubhead to impact in an open and less lofted position.

Here are swingspeed/shaft recommendations, but the best way to determine what's right for you is to demo the clubs: under 70mph, L shaft; 70-80mph, A shaft; 80-90mph, R shaft; 90-105mph, S shaft; over 105mph, X shaft.

Please note that these are guidelines. My swingspeed would put me at the border of A and R shafts, but I have an S shaft in my driver because I have more control and distance with it. The rest of my clubs are R shaft.

Listen to the pga lady about two posts up. I work for a club fitter and she is spot on, the only thing I would add is once you determine your flex test some shafts with different bending profiles. Some are stiffer in the tip while others are stiffer in the butt. It all depends on you and your game. I have a average swing speed of 113, my irons are rifles 6.0 and i have stiff in my 5 and 3 woods, my driver has an x stiff. It varies with your speed find that out and go from there.

Stiff shaft-Harder to use, yet once your swing is bettered you'll get more distance and control.

Regular shafts are more forgiving and better for begginers and some intermediate.
