Yup, is called being in "heat". Their vulva swells, they attact any male dog that is around, they may pee in their area marking regardless of how well housetrained they are, and they will bleed for a few days requiring a diaper if you don't want blood stains all over your house. After that, they may go in what is called a false pregnancy in which they put all their toys in a little nest and nurse them. Some of them go to the extent of actually releasing small amounts of milk! The more often they go in heat, the higher their chances of pyometra (their uterus fill up w pus, is nasty) and breast cancer. "Heat" will happen twice a year.

If your dog has some blood there it means she is in heat. Puppies can start going into heat around 6 - 9 months old. They will go in heat 2 times a year and there will be a little blood. It isnt usually a horrible amount but it is noticible.

During this time your dog may be more hyper or agressive. You definitely don't want to let her outside because she will get busy with any male dog who comes around. Hey! I guess you could say that. It definetly seems like they do. The correct word used for it is being in "heat" but I've heard people refer to it as their periods. It's cool that you ask though because if you don't know you may think there is something wrong with your dog or if your a first time owner you may not know that this happens to your females and you will only come home to finding blood everywhere. There are ways you can stop it or postpone it. You can spay your dog or if you breed thats usually the sign when you will be getting ready to breed her. Hope this helps! :)

With dogs it is not called getting there period, it's called coming into heat. There 1st heat is after 6 months of age and lasts a few weeks. After that a female dog will come into heat two times a year and unlike humans, they conceive while they are in heat, as woman conceive between there periods. So, dogs can have two litters a year even though it is not healthy for them to do so. It is healthier for your dog to have her spayed around 6 months of age before her first heat. It is actually called going into heat. They will bleed just like a human. This can begin to happen as early as 5 1/2 months old and continue for some time. The good news is that they only go into heat like twice a year. Each dog is different. If you do not want to breed your dog you can eliminate this all together by having her spayed. Hope this helps.

Not all dogs have heat cycles just the females..I had to add that..I am being smart .
Anyway to answer your question a female dog will come into heat at six months of age.. really depending on the dog. some will have their first heat at 7 - 9 months. Some may never come into heat I have a female Shih Tzu that has never came into heat and she is 13 years old now. So it really depends on the dog.

Yes, female dogs to get their period it happens when they go into their heat cycle usually every six months. My dog actually started her period at four months. Remember if your dog starts her period its probably best to put a diaper on her or pick her up some dog pads. Her vulva will get swollen and so will her nipples.The vet told me to put a warm wash rag on her vulva to help decrease the swelling and clean her up so the dog wont get an infection. But anyway been through the experience myself.

A dog goes on heat and bleeds but it is not really the same as having a period. A dog that is on heat and bleeding is at it's most fertile, while a human is not currently fertile while bleeding.
