Or can I just put oil in a pot? If so, then why do people waste money on a fryer?

No, you don't need a fryer. Just get a skillet (iron or not - and find a lid that fits it). Take your chicken, dip it in an egg and milk mixture, roll it in flour, (if you really want to make it good repeat those steps), and make sure your grease is hot enough to start cooking the minute it goes in. Cover it (because this will help keep the batter on better), and check on it every few minutes so you don't overbrown the outside, and so you can adjust the heat accordingly. Use tongs preferably, to turn it, cook all sides evenly. Cook until the chicken is no longer pink all the way to the bone. *Note: If you slice part of the meat off of the breasts, you'll still have meat on the bone part, plus boneless chicken, and it's easier to cook.

You don't need a deep fryer to make fried chicken. All you have to do is use a sauce pan (fill about 1/4 way) and warm the oil up slow so it doesnt splatter everywhere. Then place chicken in allow to brown on one side flip over and brown other side a good idea just incase not done all the way is to place in a 375 degree oven for about 15 mintues to make sure it is fully done.

Often the way that fryers are designed make them more safe to use, but you do not need one to make fired chicken. All you really need is a large and deep heavy frying pay with a lid [cast iron is best]. Make sure your oil is hot enough before you put your chicken in or it will just absorb the oil and taste like greesy-yuck.

Have fun....I love good fried chicken, can I come over for dinner when you make it??

you can use a pot or a deep skillet (cast iron is best). people buy a fryer to be fancy. they don't want to find a place to store all that leftover cooking oil that you actually can re-use a couple more times. I have one, and i love it because I can keep the grease in the fryer. besides i don't mess up a pot only to clean later. people also get a fryer because it doesn't heat up the whole kitchen, especially when it's warm outside.

I wouldn't put the oil in a pot (saucepan)...but you don't have to use a fryer for it either. You can just put some oil in a frying pan (skillet) and it works the same way only you have to turn in every now and then which you don't have to do with a fryer.

I have used my pressure cooker without the lid since it is a heavy pot. I fill the pot 1/3 with melted Crisco shortening. Heat oil, place chicken that has been dipped in flour, salt, pepper and paprika in to hot grease, being careful not to splatter. My pot is fairly large and I can fit one cut up chicken in it at a time. Turn chicken only once so it does not absorb grease. Deep fat fry until crust is golden brown and crispy. I have also used my electric skillet which works wonderfully. You won't need much shortening if you use an electric skillet.

You really dont need a fryer. I make my fried chicken with flour and eggs and fry in a frying pan with oil.. Its really good that way.. Also The Pampered Chef has some good pans to use for this stuff..

not necessary unless you do a lot of frying..a fryer can regulate the heat much better and if you are doing high volume cooking is just the more practical cooking item to have. I have used both. A big pot is ok, nothing wrong if you want to be frugal.

You can fry chicken in a skillet. People use deep fryers because it is easier to control the temperature of the oil and there is less splatter of the grease.

You need something that gives the chicken room to cook. A large skillet, a deep fryer, or one of your skillets that are at least 4 inches deep. When you say pot, I think of something you would boil your veges in or your noodles.
