When I'm sitting down my legs and feet wobble back and forth frequently. I even pace and can't hold still in public or at home. I'm a distraction in public and at home I keep the nieghbor below me awake. I don't know how to solve this. I've had it since I was probally 13 or 14 and I'm 22 now. People yell at me and don't understand that it's not a counscience thing that I can help. I can't just sit down. It's not that easy. I'm in a trance sometimes when I pace. I might not even know it's happening. Councelors have nothing to say about this. Councelors are stupid people who have nothing to say about any of my problems. I've been on various psycotic medications for years. So please, no oviouse answers like talk to your councelor or take meds.

Hi,
It is commonly called restless leg syndrome. It is in a type of anxiety disorder. There are some leg stretches that can help - at least temporarily...

These include calf stretches where you either stand with your toes on a step, and allow your heels to drop below the edge of the step (use a bottom step, you don't want to be falling down the stairs in the middle of the night).

Hold this for at least 60 seconds on each leg.

Do straddle stretches to stretch the inside of your thigh, again holding for at least 60 seconds.

Then do lunge- style stretches to stretch the front and back of each leg.

This will only be a temporary measure. As with all anxiety disorders, it will be most intense when you are worried about something.

Some people say that magnesium helps, but it had no effect on my husband's rls.

I would recommend trying the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. It has some practical exercises for dealing with anxiety.

If all else fails, then maybe you could get a better doctor - a psychiatrist that specifically knows about restless leg syndrome.

What you are describing sounds more like akasthesia than restless leg syndrome-restless legs usually result in jerking movements or a desire to move specifically when you are at rest. Since you describe this occuring when you are "out in public" as well, it seems less like restless leg syndrome and more like akasthesia, a well known side effect from neuroleptic medications. Benadryl and artane or cogentin usually help, but the anti-psychotic medication responsible needs to be stopped. Talk with your doc and your counselor should easily recognize akasthesia if that's what it is.

I take it you have rapid leg movements? I have restless leg sydrome and my legs will not be still at night. I have started drinking 4 to 6 ozs. of tonic water about 30 minutes before bedtime and it is amazing how wonderful this works. It is all natural and safe for everybody, I don;t understand why doctors don't tell you this instead of prescribing medicine.

Look in the yellow pages for a sleep specialist. This sounds like restless leg syndrome you also probably also have periodic limb movements (kicking and jerking in your sleep). The specialist can set up a study (they hook you up to wires and monitors) and if it's positive there are several medications for this. I had to do this and it's helped tremendously.
