There are a few things that I think might be the issue:
1. don't eat a regular meal for about an hour before you work out. It's ok to eat something small like a piece of fruit to give you some energy, but a big meal is going to make you sick because your body cannot work on digesting and exercising at the same time.
2. Fitness level. Maybe you are not fit enough to run a whole mile at the speed you are running. Try slowing down some, or take a walking break and see if that does not help.
3. How hard you work out. It sounds like you might be working out too hard in general. Why work out "really hard" as you put it. Try lowering the intensity level some. You can work out longer and feel better.
I tend to run too fast and then I cannot run as far or for as long as I like. I started using a heart rate monitor, and kept my heart rate in the recommended zone and this allowed me to work out for a whole lot longer and get in shape faster than running really fast for just a short distance.
Good luck!

you didn't say how overweight or under-shape you are so I can only offer this experience.
I run for longer than 2 minutes and I ache, if I run for 5 I start wheezing and by 6 minutes I'm feeling pretty ill myself.
I, however, am overweight and haven't done a lick of excercise in over 10 (yes, read that again 10, a decade!) years. I also don't drink as much water as I should...
SO... the answer to your question is this. Drink plenty of fluids as the others have said and measure NOT by the distance but by how you feel. Start out slow and gradually build up speed/strength.
it's like everything else, if you run before you know how to walk you'll constantly fall and get hurt... Learn to walk first. :)

Hi, my advice would be to not work your self hard? Not saying you do or anything, just when you feel that your body can't tak no more don't push yourself to do more than you can, thats not good\healty. even though in your mind your thinking I can't quit now because I gotta loose this weight, well when you do that your body can't handle no more, like you feel light headed? or sick at the stomach, that means you got a good workout but your body got too much. so if i was I was you then I wouldn't work out as hard, just every once in awhile

You are overdoing it ! Running for one mile might be "little" for some, but may be mission impossible for others. Know your capability and train up slowly.

Could be that you're not eating enough or getting enough protein in your diet. You might be getting low blood sugar.
