If it is an automatic machine it will detect when it cuts the circulation, if it is a manual and you are listening through a stethoscope you stop when you can no longer hear a pulse beat plus a bit more or go to about 170 slowly let it out until you hear the pulse beat, that is the top number then let it out further until the pulse beat disappears and that is the bottom number. You can always inflate higher if it hasn't worked the first time.

My auto inflator goes up to about 185

200, then let off pressure slowly til you hear the beat-thats the top # continue til you hear the beat and that is the bottom #. I have done so many of these I don't want to do any more.

start out @ 200, if the person is having high b.p. ,you'll have to ease up to a higher #, ...go by 10's when above 200.
