I was always amazed by the subject of religion since my elementary school days. Walking to school, I'd stop by two chinese temples, a mosque, an indian temple and a church to pray. I'd do likewise on my return. I was always welcomed, eventhough I never had a cent to donate.
As I grew older, my ritual of going to differnt places of "God" continued. I got married, raised a family and I am related to relatives who married out of of their religion. Thus I still continue this multi-religious practice, and I consider myself as some kind of a universal free thinker.
But I finally realised that the people in charge of these places of "God" are not so keen about my coming when I do not contribute regularly and consistently, say 10% or 15% of my monthly income, which can be quite sizeable. I think that when one must give a fixed regular payment to be a "member" it is not only a scam but daylight robbery which the police are not interested to investigate. Many times, I have seen those very poor trying to reach God through their religious heads but their turn is always last. Well, you may jump queue, but you have to donate!
Yeah, I think it's a scam alright and it's happening all over the world to all religions. Believe in God, believe in yourself, face adversity with resolve and humility. Respect all and we may find God with us here and the hereafter at all times... without having to pay through our nose. We could use that money to help or adopt an orphan, special child, turn a juvenile delinquent into a good citizen, pay education fees for bright children from poor families, etc2 to make this world a better place for all instead of being fooled to be with God.

Unfortunately I would have to agree with you to some extent. As a Christian, there is no doubt in my mind that some religious leaders are in it for the big bucks. Pretty easy way to make money.
However, the Bible does tell Christians to be aware of false prophets and not to buy into their games. (my words, not the Bible's) I'm sure that some of these people are indeed true Christians and live their lives accordingly but it will be up to God to judge them....

Yes, there is a TON of money to be made off religion. AND a lot of people are doing just that . Think of it as a professional person just as smart as the most intelligent scientist. That professional doesn't really believe in God but realizes that he can lie and start a ministry. Even if it is non-profit, he will be secure in money for the rest of his life.
Years ago, I had someone, who had been personally involved with Jim Baker and PTL,,,,,,,,he asked me if I realized how much money there is to be made off of religion.

Absolutely. Actually what religion does is nearly criminal...it preys on the emotionally unstable, plays on their guilt for normal human functions (such as sex, eating and sleeping), makes them more afraid of death than they already are and then finally...finally takes their money.
Instead of our government condoning and promoting religion with tax benefits, it should be outlawing organized religion. What people believe in the privacy of their own home is their business but they shouldn't be allowed to have public, tax free buildings to steal money and offer false hope from.

Yes, it makes big bucks. Go to Vatican City, I'm sure the Pope has a solid gold toilet.
Look at L. Ron Hubbard... a broke science fiction writer... makes up a story about a galactic warlord, gets retards to follow him, and presto, Scientology is formed! After that, L. Ron lived in style.

It's sure up there. Many, many years ago my great-grandfather invented something that makes modern oil wells possible. When he found out he was dying, he spoke to his minister, who reassured him he could win favor in Heaven very simply. He revised his will and left his patent (worth millions even 80+ years ago) to the church. His wife and children he left penniless in his attempt to buy his way into heaven.
Yes, great money scam.

Look at L. Ron Hubbard. He was quoted as saying if you want to make a lot of money, start a religion - and now look at Scientology.
