Yvonne Ridley is a British journalist who was captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001 when she was trying to enter the country under cover to report on the impending war.
The Taliban released her after they found that she poses no threat to them and after she PROMISED them to read the Quran.
She decided to cherry pick her readings of the Quran to the subject of women to make it easier for her to fulfill her promise and get done with it. This is when she discovered the truth. You can hear part of her story at this google video
http://video.google.com/url?docid=-376394588482191742&esrc=sr1&ev=v&q=muslim+family+bbc&vidurl=http://video.google.com/videoplay%3Fdocid%3D-376394588482191742%26q%3Dmuslim%2Bfamily%2Bbbc&usg=AL29H23qfgkyHZMzLYJHg93VEyiJZDmV4Q
You can also hear a complete interview with her at this video

And her web site is at

I would suggest this to be a good starting point. Some of the replies you got were from people who really don’t know what they are talking about.
God bless

Islam clearly teaches that a woman is a full-person under the law, and is the spiritual equal of a male. Also, according to Islamic Law, women have the right to own property, operate a business and receive equal pay for equal work. Women are allowed total control of their wealth, they cannot be married against their will and they are allowed to keep their own name when married. Additionally, they have the right to inherit property and to have their marriage dissolved in the case of neglect or mistreatment. Also, Islam does not consider woman an "evil temptress", and thus does not blame woman for the "original sin". Women in Islam participate in all forms of worship that men participate in. Actually, the rights that Islam gave to women over 1400 years ago were almost unheard of in the West until the 1900s. Less than fifty years ago in England and America, a woman could not buy a house or car without the co-signature of her father or husband!
Islam is winning Western women admirers despite hostile media coverage It is even more ironic that most British converts should be women, given the widespread view in the west that Islam treats women poorly. In the United States, women converts outnumber men by four to one, and in Britain make up the bulk of the estimated 10, 000 to 20, 000 converts, forming part of a Muslim community of 1 to 1.5 million.

Growing up I could not understand some things that I was being taught in Sunday school.
My Mother is a Christian and my Dad is an Atheist. My mother would just tell me the same thing that the Sunday school teacher was saying. My Dad would tell me that I needed to find my own answers and told my Mom that if she was not going to help me by giving me an answer that I could understand instead of telling me the same thing without her to questioning the answer then I was not to go back to Sunday school. He told me that I needed to do my own research and find the truth on my own. This was when I was 10.
At this time I would spend my summers with my grandparents. My Grand father was a Deacon and my Grand Mother was a Sunday school teacher. They would try to guide me but when I would question they too could not give me the answers.
Then when I was 16 I was in a world religion class in high school. There I began to learn about Islam and I could finally have my answers. I was so excited when I went home. But my mother was totally against it. And I was told that none of the garbage was to come into her home. At this time Dad was out of town and did not hear what she was telling me. So I would study in secret.
Less than a year after I graduated from high school I was told that I was to get married or get out of my parents home (by my Mother). I married and my husband was anti anything that was not Christian. So again I studied in secret.
After 5 years of an abusive relationship (with him cheating, hitting and being mentally abusive) I got out. I started college and began to openly study Islam. My Mother tried to set me down and tell me how wrong I am but my Dad has been there beside me still telling me that I needed to find my own way.
I reverted 2 years ago and have never been happier. I learn something new everyday. I am now married to a wonderful Muslim man that treats me with love and respect.

the islamic religioun is very different than the way americans or non-muslims in general display it. islam is all about respect for women, before islam came, women were oppressed and had no rights. this is one of the main reasons that many women hasted to converting to islam. i am a muslim 17 year old and practice islam even though my mother is christian. for example americans believe that the veil oppresses women instead the islamic clothing gives respect to the womans body as it is sedusive, instead they think that buy using women as a business obvect (by placing nacked pictures of women on products to sell more) that they are liberating the women.

First of all, let me Greet you with the Islamic greetings: May the peace, mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you.
I am Glad someone asked a question about Islam. Although i am no scholar, nor am i qualified to talk about womens rights in Islam, i will guide you to the best of resources where you can find out about women's rights in Islam.
These are links to a video in google, these lectures are by one of the renowned Speaker on Islam, and Comparative Religion. This Lecture is specifically on women's rights in Islam, and it is in two parts. May I also add that the speaker (Dr. Zakir Naik) actually starts speaking from about 34 minutes on in the video. They are:
Part 1

Part 2

If this doesnt work for you, then there are other videos which you can download or see online on the following site:

There are many scholars on this website, but i would recommend Dr. Zakir Naik.
Also, if you have any other questions or any other misconceptions about Islam, there are many other videos of his that you can watch or download.
I hope This is of use to you.

There are books out by mostly Western women, and women who've come to the U.S. who are Muslimahs and openly discuss such issues. Try the Yahoo search engines...

The Taliban has a great website where they show you how to beat women in the street and force women to be beggars because they are not allowed to work.
There are also some great sites about middle eastern Muslim wives who have had their arms cut off, they are set on fire, etc,
it's quite enlightening.
