How far apart do the little balls (I dont know what they're actually called) in a shotgun shell spread apart? I heard it was something like an inch every hundred feet or something like that.

There are many differences in the Guns themselves. Some guns have full chokes or modified chokes and some have variable chokes.Shotshells have shot inside and there are many sizes of shot.Your gun dealer can tell you what to expect from your combination of gun choke and shot size and no one can tell you from your information your spread. To know the best you should test fire your gun at spread targets then you know exactly what your gun can do and you are more confident when you take your gun in the field and know your limits and capabilities.

Those balls are called shot (that's singular and plural) and it depends on the choke, the size of the shot, the amount of shot, the amount of powder and the length of the barrel. You can somewhat dictate the spread. For instance a sawed off shotgun is used to have a wider spread. The spread at a certain range, dictated by the application, is called a pattern.

It varies depending on factors such as listed above.

Taurus makes a revolver that uses .410 shot shells and is rifled so that, as demonstrated in their video, the shot will spread up to a foot in diameter in a distance of only 4 or 5 feet.
