You really should contact a vet. If you explain your financial situation to them most will come up with a reasonable solution for you.

It sounds like your cat has an abscess. It probably will not go away on its own. You can put peroxide on it 2-3 times a day and keep it as clean as possible. But this may not do a lot to help.

It sounds like an abcess. If that is what it is you can treat by just keeping hot packs on it and Antibiotic ointments. Since you say it is open it sounds horrific but believe it or not open it better than closed. Cats have tendency to heal from the Outside in and trap all the infection inside causing abcess and internal infection. If it stays open and draining it will probably clear on its own. But keep it clean as possible and keep his litter box very very clean dump often and keep Antibiotic ointment (get the kind the Pain relieve added) on it and lots of hot packs.
If it gets worst or stops draining and begins to swell you will need a vet to give oral antibiotics and possibly a drain and it is not cheap...

It could be a tumor. I would go and get it checked out.
