i often feel dizzy, lightheaded and have just blamed it on being hungry or panic attacks. im skinny and lately have noticed i have lost weight for no reason, im down to 45kgs (im a teenager) i usually am around 50, it always changes though.

is this normal? i have had general blood tests done at the start of the year but the doctor never contacted me back so im assuming everything is fine. is it possible they could have missed something because it was just a general blood test?

A general blood test would test your blood sugar. Your doctor would have contacted you if anything was wrong with your blood tests. However if it was borderline and you did not tell your doctor about your symptoms, it could have been overlooked.

Yes you can have diabetes and not know it. And it can be very serious.

I would go back to the doctor and tell him your symptoms and let him do the proper tests. If you did not fast before your blood test, the test for blood sugar would not be accurate for someone with your symptoms.

There is a possibility that you could be hypoglycemic too. That would be low blood sugar.

This is not normal, see the doctor.

Yes, it's certainly possible to have diabetes and not know it. Thousands of people do. The consequences of not treating it would vary depending on the severity of the condition and your diet.

Blood sugar is part of a standard blood test, and if this was a fasting complete blood screening (fasting is standard for some tests), it should have resulted in low blood sugar which would send up red flags.

Your best course of action would be to contact your doctor and tell her of your concerns. Blood sugar tests are fairly easy and low cost. You do need to know one way or the other.

A sudden loss of 5kg with no apparent cause might also be a concern. Tell your doctor and get tested.

I would assume that blood sugar would be one of the items on a general blood test. But it is certainly possible to be diabetic and not know it. My baby sister died from undiagnosed diabetes about 40 years ago.
General symptoms of diabetes is frequent urination, thirsty, and lethargic. You could be hypoglycemic (opposite of diabetic) or you could have a thyroid condition. Even a brain tumor might give those symptoms. A teenager is not likely to have a brain tumor, but a friend of mine died with one years ago. The reason he didn't go to the Dr. with his weight loss, was that he was on a DIET! When he quit dieting, he continued to lose weight. I know a waitress who started losing weight without trying and her Dr. found that she had a hyperactive thyroid.
You need to seek medical help, since you don't want to wait until the condition worsens.

It's possible to be a diabetic and not know it. Most people with it don't find out for years. Weight loss and dizziness are symptoms, but celiac's is what came to my mind. But these can be attributed to so many things. A general blood test may not test for diabetes and you should ask for that one specifically.

ABSOLUTELY, weight loss is one possible symptom of diabetes. I have seen this happen to a family member, and it was believed he had cancer or AIDS, he had lost so much weight before seeing a doctor about it. He had type 2 diabetes, and now takes insulin injections.

The other symptoms sound precisely like low blood sugar, which is part and parcel of diabetes: the failure of the body to regulate blood sugar levels. Diabetics swing between hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Ask any doctor.

I don't know about the test and stuff you will have to talk to the doctor who ordered the test but it is possible to have diabetes and not know it and you can die from it. If after talking to your doctor you still have no answer try another doctor or find a doctor who specializes in diabetes and ask him to run the test.

You have to have a blood test for diabetes. If it runs in your family,it can be possible. Either way find out ,diabetes can be a very high maintenance disease left untreated and the ramifications of it are many. Please get checked.Dizzy and lightheaded can also be highblood pressure, which also needs attention.

Most general blood tests will check your blood sugar levels. If you are pre-diabetic it can go unnoticed. I wouldn't worry about diabetes yet since you are so young and light weight. It may just be a hormonal thing since you are getting older.

blood sugar should have been tested even in general blood test... this should tell you if you have diabetes along with the other blood workup results.
alot of Dr.'s though do not seem to tell patients that they are "borderline" or are in pre-diabetes territory...where it can still be controlled by diet before requiring insulin pills or injections. it is important to eat regularly , avoid sugar, small amounts of fruit, not alot of white flour......lots of vegies, nuts, whole grains and see if this helps...also recontact your Dr. and ask for a copy of the blood tests and read up on the internet your results and what the "norm" should be... you have to be proactive in your health these days.....
