We are having a baby soon. The dog licks the carpet constantly and we don't want her doing this, especially with a baby soon to be crawling aroud on it. We don't want to get rid of her, but this is beginning to create real problems.

Have your carpets cleaned. (good idea with a baby coming) and get your dog stuffed toys with a carpet like texture. Many dollar stores carry stuffed animals, just cut off all the plastic pieces first.

you should find a powder that is NON-TOXIC but will taste horrible to the dog and then sprinkle the powder around. maybee some type of spice or something but check with a vet just to make sure it wont make the dog sick

also, if you catch the dog doing it, yell NO, and move the head away from the carpet swiftly. you have to catch the dog while in the act or else it is worthless.

you should monitor the dog directly

How can the dog licking the carpet cause so much trouble? It's likely there is something spilled or the dog threw up there, peed there etc, and not cleaned up properly.

Dogs like carpets that have remaining stains on them. They can smell the residue left on the carpet by the stain and lick it to try to get at the stain. Just get your carpets clean and deodorized.

Find a room you can shut the dog away in,or use a walk -in cage in the garage. Dogs need to have their own territory , and babies need to be kept safe, that includes from dogs and their germs. Are you a good "pack leader" for your dog? Have you done obedience classes? And do you understand your dog's true nature?
Get professional advice, and don't take any risks, it is perfectly possible to keep a dog and a baby safely, but never leave them together.

Bitter Lime is non-toxic and taste bad, just put it on your carpet. There may be a lingering smell though.

a quick squirt of water should do the trick. if you see the dog do this then just squirt him/her with some luke water and teach him/her that way or you could go and get some type of training at petsmart it should help.
