I live in an apartment that is basically one room and I want to paint. Do you have to stick to one color or can you divide the room into areas? How do you go about making the decision to divide the room. Do you have to use colors of the same family? Any advice would be a great help.

Try a mural on one wall there are some really reasonable ones at http://www.walldecorshops.com/index.html . Then paint to accent or blend with the mural. It can make the room look so much larger and add visual interest.

It's normal to pain 3 walls one color and one an accent color -- I think using three or even four colors could look great. No they don't all have to be in the same family. For example, olive green and a burnt orange look great together, as do chocolate brown and tomato red -- or chocolate brown and light blue.
