I recently started taking Zoloft, and I went online today to find that my phyciatrist didn't tell me all of the side effects. The one I'm worried about the most is the lack of sexual desire, which I heard can continue even if I stopped taking them. Does anyone have any advice/information? Would it be wise to take something else for post traumatic stress disorder and depression that doesn't have those side effects?

Well, there is very little evidence that the side effects you mentioned will not go away if you stop the medication. In fact, for most people, this is temporary. The other PTSD medications all have similar side effects. My advice is continue to take the Zoloft and re-evaluate your PTSD in a couple of months. If you have not had significant improvement, switch to something else like Lexapro.

Zoloft Permanent Side Effects

Zoloft and Paxil have the side affect that affects sexual desire. It also can cause a man to not be able to orgasm. But as far as I know I have never seen it be a permanent thing if someone stopped taking the medication. There are several other meds out there that you can try. Celexa is a good one. Celexa is an antidepressent and it does not affect the libido. Also there are other meds out there to help deal with PTSD. Some of the meds will help you on a daily basis and some will help you sleep at night and can stop the nightmares. Doxepin and Luvox are medications for PTSD.

I have seen people take clonipin and quetanapine at night for nightmares and sleep. Prozac and buspar help with depression and Lithium helps stabilize the hi's and lows of moods. With lithium you would have to have a blood test done every three months to make sure you don't have a toxic level in your system.

Hello, I was taking zoloft in high quantity for about 8 months and the results were fantastic! I was happy all the time, no PTSD episodes, no anger outbursts....but....I could not orgasm with my sexual partner, never ever, never! It caused alot of anxiety in me and problems in my relationship. In my opinion, the loss of my partner s affection for me and the loss of my feeling like a viral man was worse than the anger and ptsd episodes so i stopped taking zoloft on a gradual basis. First week i lowered my dose by half, i felt extremely nauseated and light headed, lasted about a week until i adjusted to a lower dose, so then i lowered my dose again by half. the nausea returned slightly and the light headedness did as well but my ability to orgasm slowly began to return, no mad or anger episodes yet. So as my body adjusted, i totally stopped taking zoloft on the third week. occasionally i would break off the smallest piece of zoloft i could and take it if my nausea returned but finally after a month i am totally non dependent on zoloft. I still have a fuzzy light headed feeling that comes and goes and im slightly sensitive to motion and motion sickness but its passing. i also rarely sleep past 8 hours, on zoloft i could sleep 12 hours easily. i like the new time i have. i have had some small episodes of anger and anxiety but nothing to bad. i am much happier off the zoloft.

Hello, I have definite memory loss from taking Zoloft and, I fear, it's irreversible. I have taken it for years, but it has not affected sexual desire. It has caused me to gain about 35 lbs. which I have not been able to lose on any diet. Anti-depressants and side effects can vary from person to person and, unfortunately, it's a trial and error situation. Your physician will, probably, prescribe another medication if needed, but will want you to be on Zoloft long enough to see if you actually do have any complications. I have been fighting depression my whole life and it's an everyday battle no matter what medication I am taking. I am truly sorry for your post traumatic stress and will say a prayer for you. Please say one for me. God bless !

Hi, I use to take Zoloft for anxiety. The only side affect I had was after being on it for a long time, it did make me lose some weight, plus I started having some chest pain, that scared me, but please keep in mind I was on it for atleast 2 yrs prior. However; because of my anxiety panic disorder I did not want to go off of the medicine , so my doctor put me on Celexa, and I have been on it now for years. It does keep my anxiety under control. Please remember though every persons body is different so the affects I had may not affect you that way, but if you are concerned, talk with your doctor, cause he can change it. Good Luck.. :)

for many years with no problems.
