I want to join the United States Coast Guard, and I have asthma. I learned the Navy can disqualify you if you discovered you have asthma after the age of 12. It is my life goal to enlist in the Coast Guard. Am I disqualified because I discovered my asthma at 14, even though it is only a mild case?

To be specific, I want to go to the Academy. Does the way you enter the Coast Guard have any difference on the limits?

I'm thinking DQ, but it wouldn't hurt to ask a recruiter. If they say no, and you're open to the Army, you would have a better chance. Here is the enlistment standards, which all branches use.

My brother is an asthmatic and after ten years his asthma has shown no sign of improving. He has been to several doctors but they didn't help much.
If you want a proven, all-natural way to cure your asthma, without having to pay for useless medications with harmful side-effects, then this is the most important page you'll ever read.

Go see your recruiter and tell him/her the truth. They will work with you.
As for being sent to Iraq. Most unlikely. The Coast Guard's role is primarily domestic. From my understanding all members in the Middle East are volunteers. (I have volunteered repeatedly but have not been selected.)
You will like the Coast Guard. They treat you better than the other services and you learn a real trade.

Its achieveable, you may get a waiver. many human beings interior the protection rigidity have bronchial asthma. however the only thank you to verify is to pass talk with a recruiter. After that, the healthcare professional at MEPS will come to a decision.

I know I tried to get into the Air Force and my asthma was the only thing that kept me out. It was one of the recruiter's last questions, and when I said yes, he said "oops...sorry. You can't be in the armed forces"

I work in a recruiting office-DQ. they MIGHT be able to do a medical waiver if you can get proof that you have not had ANY effects since14-but 12 usually is the cut off. but the Academy is different-it is so selective that they might not even consider you.
