What is the fine for grand theft check writing charge?Last year I was told by an overseas client that I had a wire pending. For $70,000. Since he had paid previously in amounts of $35,000 and $15,000 on 4 occasions I had no reason to think it wouldn't. When he gave me confirmation I wrote a check to my mother in law
for $16000 and to my wife to be put into a savings account. When he at first said the wire was delayed I told the bank to hold and redeposit. When he said he couldn't I asked everyone to cancel checks. The bank wouldn't cancel the 2 checks. And then apparently have tried to charge me with grand theft - I guess they don't know it's my mother in law and think I tried to defraud - does anyone have any thoughts? I've never even had a jaywalking ticket but to sleep at night would like to hear this will be dropped or if anyone knows the fine I can pay to avoid a jail sentence for something I didn't do - I have an autistic child and want them to stop

Can't the money you gave your family be returned? The law and fines can vary by state.

If the bank did not lose any money then there is a good chance to get that dropped...with an attorney of course. However if those checks were cashed by your bank and u didnt return the money, you would have been arrested already. And for grand theft, there is no fine, you would probably go to jail or be put on probation or both. If a year has passed, I wouldnt worry too much about it. Grand theft is a felony and they wold have picked u up already

If you were going to be charged with anything, they would have done it already (most of the time).

It sounds like you should have waited until you knew for sure that you were going to have that money. That is an incredible amount of money to screw with, even if you were not trying to scam the bank.

What I think happened, is the bank tried to cash the checks, couldn't, then tried to charge you with fraud, but there weren't anyone to file charges (no recipient of the check), so they dropped it. They did not lose any money, and to pursue this would most likely cost them money in the long run.

After so long, I would not think that you could even get a fine now, but who knows. The law works in mysterious ways.

the fine for grand theft can vary, depending on the amount of theft. but, also can carry jail time. if what you say about them trying to get you for grand theft is true, then someone must have gotten money from the checks you've written. i don't know of a bank that will cash large checks without holding them for a time to verify the account it was written on. talk to the person who sent you the check. then, talk to the bank. then, talk to a lawer about the person who sent you the check.(if i'ts no good) you are responsible for checks you write. this almost sounds like one of those scams out of nigeria. good luck.

Sounds like the checks were negotiated. Once they are negotiated, the deed is done.

What you should have done is put a stop payment of the checks.

In Texas when you knowingly write a check on an account you know to be insufficintly funded you have committed a felony.

You have been conned via the previous "Nigerian funds rip-off" i'm getting 2 or 3 of those phony tale emails each week. yet, I heavily doubt which you're in extreme difficulty for those 2 assessments. a good criminal professional could make mincemeat of a monetary business enterprise dumb sufficient to do to any extent further than return those assessments as "inadequate money" to pay them. i comprehend a decide who could snicker them out of court docket. in case you get a public defender it won't cost you for criminal costs and a fledgling criminal professional sparkling out of regulation college could get you off with a easy high quality. in case you do have difficulty previous what I pronounced, get my email from my ha_mer Yahoo account and deliver me a message with the finished tale.
