That is a mental illness, mental illness can not be caused by marijuana use. However, marijuana use can cause paranoid delusions.

But remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

Marijuana has never been linked to causing any mental disorder, but a small percentage of users reported that it can precipitate or exacerbate latent or existing mental disorders. So it isn't a cause, but if you have a mental disorder, you probably should stay away from marijuana (or any psychoactive drugs for that matter).

A marijuana smoker is arrested every 45 seconds, yet people wonder why they are paranoid....

I don't know about the schizophrenia but I know it can cause paranoia in some people. I had paranoid episodes twice and that was enough for me. A lot of people can smoke pot and enjoy it but not me. I don't ever want to be that scared again. It is a ghastly feeling. Fortunately the effects were temporary.

The latest medical research indicates yes - it is a factor, but it seems you have to have a latent tendency and the drug will will tip the balance. Google New Scientist, BBC etc.

However I was fairly relaxed about drugs, and now having had a brother with psychotic depression and my son ill with Schizophrenia I have completely changed my mind. For some people these illnesses can be so severe that they never recover. Not only that but I have seen the effect street drugs and alcohol have on people with mental illness - terrible.

My advice is - it really isn't worth it, mental illness's can ruin lives and destroy families. The pleasure brought by drugs can have an awful downside. if you don't believe me then list the famous people who have had trouble with drugs and then find out their stories. You will find no instances where drugs have helped with creativity or long term happiness.

marijuana use itself won't cause schizophrenia. schizophrenia is believed to be a genetic mental disorder, although it is also suspected hard drug abuse can "bring out" the disorder in those that may be pre-disposed but do not display or feel any symptoms.

excessive, prolonged abuse of marijuana has been known to cause paranoia and panic attacks... but you'd have to be smoking an awful lot over a long period of time.

Everyone is different, and by asking this question does this now mean you are paranoid? I have had Paroanoia brought on by this drug many years ago, and that was when it was pure, nowadays who knows what crap it is mixed with. Just don't do it...

i dont know if it does for a fact, but one friend of mine was diagnosed with that and sent to a specialist, she smokes it everyday, all day. theres got to be a link. i think it just makes an already crazy person 10 times worse.

Yes it does seem to increase both the incidence of this and depression in its users.

it has also been discovered that long-term cannabis smokers may suffer a dramatic and obvious form of premature brain atrophy. This means it undoubtedly contributes to dementia as well!
