I am planning on taking some long-overdue time off work for a vacation, and am looking for some ideas for interesting places to visit in the US. I will be travelling alone, and enjoy museums, zoos, art, but also enjoy light hikes, and "meeting the locals" etc. Would like to keep cost to about $1000 for a week, and if it's warm, that would be nice too! (Fed up with all the snow in Indiana!) Driving or flying are both acceptable means of travel, and I enjoy the creative, different, unusual, and unexpected...

Thanks for the ideas--but I am travelling ALONE & in the UNITED STATES (so Sandals Jamaica is out--that's a "couples only" place), as is Paris at this time. (I am waiting on my passport for a trip later this year out of the country...)

you will get ideas. San Fran has all that you noted....hiking those hills will get you plenty of exercise too. Hang out in a few wine bars in SOMA or the Uniion Square area...you will meet people.

I actually really like Washington DC for alot of what you described but you'd have to be more careful about walking around alone at night (not that you shouldn't be more careful ANYWHERE).

Miami is tons of fun, but short on museums...

smokey mountains. there in north carolina and tenessee. and believe me they are beautiful. if you want to escape that's the way to do it. and there are some nice places to hike down there. and southern people are incredibly nice. you might also want to stop in gatlinburg, tenessee or cherokee, NC (to go shopping, pick up some souveniers). believe me this is a great place to go.
