I started a long distance relationship a few months ago and was wondering how these types of relationships start and progress in the best case scenarios. How often should we visit and talk on the phone. When should we become exclusive/commit etc. I ask because it is so different from dating someone nearby that you can see every weekend and let the relationship progress as you see each other each week. Any experiences or suggestions?

I started a LDR almost two years ago. We met through friends, became friends IM-ing and occasionally talking on the phone and hanging out a couple of times, and started dating after 4 months of knowing each other. We were exclusive right away, but I know it's not the same for everyone. I think you should commit to someone as soon as you feel like the two of you are devoted to each other. As for visiting and talking on the phone, the more the better, I say! :) Whatever makes the two of you happy. Remember, it's your relationship.

And yes, a LDR definitely has its ups and downs, but if it wasn't worth it, then why would you be dating them in the first place? :)

There aren't any real standards. My hubby and I were Long Distance (he was UK and I was Florida!). He came to visit me once, I wouldn't let him leave, we married - end of story (but it's a great one!). Do what feels comfortable and natural. Don't try to set rules and if it's a good relationship, it will flourish! Good Luck!
