I recently heard from my uncle (who is an earth scientist/ university proffesor) that there was a gathering of 300 or so scientists who have been monitoring the suns activity and have noticed that sunspots are increasing and that the sun is slowing down its rotation. The suns rotation is apparently what cools it , and when it eventually stops turning (predicted as sometime in 2012) it will continue heating up in its core until it eventually explodes. As such the earth will be plunged to -40 (celcius) temperatures and of course into darkness.

And on a slightly off topic note; isn't it coincidental that so many religions , civilizations and prophets have predicted the earth ending in 2012? So; what are your guys thoughts?

Regardless of the speculations here.....I saw a documentary some years ago that stated the sun was going to get hotter and hotter until it eventually burns itself out. We've seen more solar activity in the last 20 years than ever recorded in history.
Solar flares even knocking out major power grids, sattelite communications, etc...This would naturally cause much panic and despair if the governments of the world told the citizens they knew this to be true. So naturally they would start coming up with storys like global warming and climate shift. I think the theory of the sun burning out holds the truth and yes many cultures and civilizations have revered the sun to be the all mighty giver and the taker away of life. We have let the ancient teachings get so far away from us that it has become a joke for some to think that the ancient Mayans or the Aztecs could have been on to something. I hate how people are so gullible to believe that the government would tell us all......"yes it's true ladies and gentlemen. The world as we know it will be over in 2012"
Can you imagine the whole world would go mad!

BTW The sun is a star and all stars burn out eventually.

Your uncle is pulling your leg. The sun's rotation isn't slowing at any appreciable speed. And anyway, that's not what cools the sun. The fact that it is radiating light and heat cools the sun. Sunspots increase and decrease in an 11 year cycle. The sun isn't going to explode since it's not massive enough to go supernova but it will turn into a red giant eventually and if the earth is still in range it will engulf it and melt it down. And I've only heard of the one civilization that predicted the end of the earth for 2012, but it doesn't matter. People can't see into the future.

You uncle was lying to you. There is no such prediction, scientists are saying no such thing. The Sun is not going to stop turning, now or ever, even after it turns into a white dwarf. And that's 5 billion years from now, not 10. The Sun will NEVER explode; it isn't big enough. And even if it did, it would take out the Earth with it.

Well I for one hope that it does not happen!! If the sun explodes we are pretty much doomed here on earth.

I just wonder how earlier civilizations happened to pick 2012 for the earth ending?

I may be a paranoid person, but I think it's just another scare-tactic used to convince consumer's to consume. Boost the economy and fund government-sponsored programs supports bomb shelters and the like. But make up your own mind, i suppose.
