You can download or order a CD from UBUNTU

Get 6.10 or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM. It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems. It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system. Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

Yes, I must say I also thought of going the Linux way once and I did try it. I searched the Web and got a place who send it too me for a nominal cost on DVD (whilst the program itself naturally is free). Now I am not stupid with computers at all, but the Linux was really not working for me. I simply could not get it right to add hardware, make changes, get to my partitioned drive, nothing. It wasn't a rash desicion, but after much trying I had to take it off again and return to Windows.

It can be anything up to over 1GB.
To save the time, check the computer magazines at any decent newsagents as there are often one or two LINUX magazines with cover CD / DVD disks with one or more versions of LINUX on it, such as UBUNTU (700MB to download otherwise) - http://www.ubuntu.com

I think they recommend you burn it to a DVD or something, but to be honest, Linux is over-rated, hardly anything works for it, and if it does, it costs you more than twice as much.

depends on what version you are downloading, but it can range from hundreds of megabytes to almost a gigabyte.
