Bronx is not a bad area, there is not too much crime. Some areas in the Bronx have more crime then others. City Island is a great communtity. It is a quaint small town, and you have a great view of the Long Island Sound. Westchester areas such as Pelham, New Rochelle, and Eastchester are pretty expensive, but very safe and their is almost no crime.

Do what most people do in Manhattan, leave across the bridge in New Jersey and take a bus to work. I was born ed and raised in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. Cliffside park is very nice, safe, less crowded and much cheaper than Manhattan. There are a lot of houses and Condominiums in Cliffside Park. You can Also live in Edgewater New Jersey, which is beautiful. When I was little I went to Catholic grammar school. We always called the kids from Edgewater the river rats. Edgewater in the 70's and 80's was run down with a lot of old ,rundown, large abandoned factories. In the 90's many businesses invested in Edgewater and it is HOT. The Hudson river is the only thing separating Edgewater from Manhattan. You can see the NYC skyline from Edgewater and the George Washington Bridge. You never have to leave Edge water. There is a big movie theater, a lot of little malls,Restaurants and popular stores. It is a nice Yuppie place to live. I will give you more information if you want it. Just ask.

Towns in the suburbs of NYC or sections of NYC outside Manhattan. I believe you were asking for within NYC but not Manhattan. If you are looking for the suburban lifestyle in the city, Staten Island cant get any less urban. Some nice communities without the high-rises are the areas around Flushing, Queens, Fresh Meadows, Bayside, Whitestone, Astoria, Forest Hills. Some more urban neighborhoods that are very nice: Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Woodside, Bay Ridge....
Suburbs outside the city, well, its the suburbs, so most are relatively safe, Nassau County, Westchester, etc....
