You might want to reconsider going in. Although alot of root canals come out ok, some have problems and you don't want to call in at the last minute. It depends on why you are having the root canal, the condition of the tooth, how you react to numbing agents, etc.
If the tooth is very infected and painful to start with, it might provide good relief, but again, it might hurt worse tonight because of the trauma to the area. make sure you get pain meds so if that happens you have something to take. It does swell some from the dental work and novacain type agent but not too bad.
Usually root canals are done in 2-3 appointments, if infected it may take longer because you may need to have antibiotics and leave the filling off so the infection can drain. Usually the nerve is removed and infection cleaned the first appt, you get a cotton ball put in there, 2nd appt is more cleaning, and temp filling, then 3rd appt is the permant filling, then 4th would be a crown if you need one.

Every root canal is different. If you have a very sore tooth, it usually feels better when the numbness wears off. So times you can have one that is really is zinger, not common--- but it the one you always hear about. Normally, you know you had work done, jaw a little sore from the injection, from being open, but no real pain unless you bite down too hard. Soften your diet. Think of it as a cut in your finger. If you bump it repeatedly it hurts. Swelling is not common after a root canal, take what ever you take for pain before you go to the appointment and time every four hours after that, in fact he will probably give you a prescription for a pain killer. If you have to drive yourself, or use equipment at work that is hazardous on pain pills, may want to let the boss know you need time off for the night.

I had one and I didn't have any pain. Once the root in gone, there's no nerve to cause pain. I walked out of my root canal and felt great. I have heard a lot of horror stories about pain during though.

You may be in a little pain after the numbing wears off. But you should be able to function. Just have some Advil with you and take it if you are in discomfort.
