Hi. I'm thinking about switching to the Linux OS but need some advice. Firstly, what software is available on Linux? How about Photoshop, DVD Shrink etc?
Secondly, which version of Linux is best for everyday use?

I would recommend Ubuntu. It is pretty easy to use, there is lots of software for it, and great forums to help you. I would install Gimpshop as alternative for Photoshop. http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/gimpshop_2.2.11-1_i386.deb
Then install Automatix, it is a nice program that will install nice extras that are not in the regular repositories, including Xdvdshrink.

I haven't dabbled with Linux myself, but I know friends that have been using it since it became public. DVD Shrink is platform specific for the Windows environment. Photoshop is also platform specific for Windows and Mac. There is a free alternative to Photoshop called "Gimp", which is available for multiple platforms including Linux.
I've seen Red Hat used in the past, but today it costs money to have it. Nowadays, my friends use two different Linux distributions, which are free. The first choice goes to Ubuntu which is top notch in my opinion. It is fully usable with many software options preloaded upon installation. The second choice goes to Open Suse.

Ubuntu works wonderfully on my laptop.
I suggest you download the live CD. Boot up without installing it and play with it to make sure it works with your hardware and does what you want.
Gimp is not as sophisticated as Photoshop but for most people it is more than enough

for everyday use, use Kubuntu, for graphics processing use GIMP
