The thing is you can have a name that has more than one origin. Look at the name Smith. It is derived from Schmidt, Smit and several other spellings. Its namebearers encompasses many different Nationalities. Maybe the name was shortened or somehow changed over time, maybe not. I've run in to the same kind of trouble on my maiden name and while doing research I have found French and Italians with the same surname. One lady in Florida told me that her name was Italian and was shortened from a much longer name.

I found some Virdi's in the California Birth Index who appear "Indian" with names like Daljit, Gurpreet, Jasvir, Kabir.... etc.

At this point there is simply no substituting researching "your" line person by person, generation by generation. This shouldn't be too hard if you are only working on the Virdi line. Write down all of the information you have on the people in that line until you get stuck. It would be at this point that I would go onto

and post a query. You would be suprised how quickly you can get an answer sometimes.

Here is another link that may help you in your search for Indian ancestors. This appears to have several links that may help you.

I'm sorry I don't have a quick answer for you; however, in this case there simply isn't one. Good luck and I would be happy to help you further if I can.
