I like Canon. Nothing against other brands, it's just personal experience and preference. I am going to assume you are looking for a digital camera that is an easy point & shoot and is user friendly?
Not knowing what your budget is, Canon has an awesome line of cameras that can fit any kind of budget.
Consider this when shopping for a digital camera: 1) 5 mp this is best for most users 2) OPTICAL zoom with at least 4X. Don't even consider digital zoom 3) Has a viewfinder. Some models are doing away with the viewfinder. It still is very helpful to have, when your the subject is difficult to see in the LCD/display screen on a very sunny day, or to save battery life. 4) Uses AA regular or rechargeable batteries. Some models have specialized lithium ion batteries, where you charge it while in the camera. With AA, you can always pick up if you find yourself caught with low batteries and are not able to charge or find a replacement quickly. 5) And a PLUS, if it can take video/movie mode.
Canon has an awesome line that can fit the bill. Consider the PowerShot models, the A460, the A530/A540/A550/A560 and A630/A640. Here is a link of their cameras: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro...
I have a Canon PowerShot A620 which I purchased new online last year. My favorite feature of this model is the vari-angle display/LCD screen. It allows to protect the screen when not in use. Now they have an updated version the A630 and A640. Here is a review and its feature up close and personal:

Here is where I go on-line to shop for the best price for digital cameras. Just type in your camera model in the ‘search keyword’: http://lowpricedigital.com/category.asp?...
When deciding to purchase on-line, buy soon or check daily as prices changes amongst the merchants. You'll find them available to purchase 'new' or 'refurbished'.
If you rather buy from the stores, check the usual places--
Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal Mart, Target. Even consider Office Max, Office Deport, Sam's Club/CostCo; anywhere that has a camera department.
Hope I didn't overwhelm you! Good luck!

You didn't specify your budget or your photographic abilities or interests, which leads me to believe that you are new at digital photography. Please forgive me making the assumption that you are looking for an entry level camera if this incorrect.
Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for being a 10 MP camera.
I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.
The A620 was rated about twice as good as any as far a battery life. I hope the A630 and A640 are just as good. Use Energizer e2 LITHIUM batteries and you will be happy with battery life.
With this camera, you will find that the included memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III.

If you want a sleek, smaller camera that will easily fit in your pocket, consider the Canon Powershot SD600. It gives up some of the features of the A630 and 640, but at least it still has an optical viewfinder, which I consider to be essential.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A530 or A540, are both great choices. You will need a decent memory card, though. I'd say get at least 512 MB.

The A530 is being closed out, but you may still find it on the shelf in some stores.

There are the two most popular names on the market, everybody in the world know Canon and Nikon, I'm a Canon user, therefore I suggest the entry level Canon XTI/400D. Canon is well known for speed, fast focus for action shots, clean high ISO, Canon dominates the sports photography business, 99 percent of sport photographers use Canon pro cameras. Nikon's are more for weddings photogrphy.

i would say as you say that you are not a techie look for a camera that has simple to use menus .auto mode auto flash etc some have macro mode ,(close up ) others have anti red eye some have fill in flash others scene mode like night timre snow cloudy indoors etc so it all depends on what you want to use it for .if you want to just take snaps of family and friends when at home or on holidays or even parties .a minimum 6 mega pixel point and shoot digital camera will suffice

if you want to spend your money on a high quality digital camera, you might want to consider a Nikon or a Canon brand with a high pixel on it,and they also have a slr type which you could change the lens from a wide angle to telephoto lens
