Picture Dark, abnormal, Changing Color Temperature
Clean the Spark Gaps on each CRT PWB. Remove the Cap, clean the contacts with thin fine sand paper, blow out, reseal.
Remove the CRT Sockets, clean the pins on the CRT. Push the CRT socket on and off several times.

Picture Flickers (Brightness changes up and down): Picture doesn't blank out completely.

There are several situations that can cause this symptom, but there are some clues that can lead you to make the right decision as to what is causing this problem.

First: Does this happen when the unit is cold or after it warms up or anytime?

AFTER UNIT WARMS UP:

If this situation happens when the unit warms up, suspect the Flyback.
This can also be confirmed by selecting an external input without an input and bring up the OSD. If the problem is the Flyback, the OSD will flicker in brightness.
You can use Freeze spray to cool down the Flyback and if this is the problem, the symptom of flicker will diminish.

WHEN THE UNIT IS COLD:

If this happens when the unit is cold and then it diminishes as it warms up, suspect the Rainforest IC I401.

HAPPENS ANYTIME:

Check the spark gaps on each CRT PWB. G851, G8A1 and G801
Clean the Spark Gaps on each CRT PWB. Remove the Cap, clean the contacts with thin fine sand paper, blow out, reseal.
IF THE FLICKER IS ACTUALLY LINES IN THE PICTURE:

This usually happens when the unit is cold.
This is usually caused by poor contact inside the Anode Cups or a CRT.

NOW.....are you sure the HEATER is the ONLY POSSIBILITY?
I wouldn't stake my life on it.........

That would be the INITIAL tests I would perform, checking the Heater resistance, but there's always more to check......

Maybe you should let a TECH worry about the problem with your TV.

To answer your question as you have asked it
Where to find the heater resister-- ok then follow the wire loom down from the crt base board , look for one wire close to where it is soldered to the board and see if you can spot a 2 watt res, it will also connect to the flyback transformer, the value of the resister will be stamped on and will be from 1ohm to 2.2ohm.
How to test ? well then you need a multimeter set to low ohms , pull the base board off the crt and then measure the resister , it should measure near enough the value that is printed on it, oh yes the resister looks like a Grey cement tube maybe half as thick as a pencil.
The symptoms of the resister being faulty will be no pic at if it is open circuit or if just gone high then the pic will look like a low emission pic tube .... in fact many a pic tube has been changed by mistake because this resister was not tested ! Good look any way . Cheers Pete
