On most four wheel drives, 2 high to 4 high is fine - as long as you are driving in a straight line and preferably off road. 4 high to 4 low is a no-no. Always stop before doing this. A lot of more careful owners actually stop before swapping between 4WD and 2WD. This is also good policy so that you can get out, adjust tyre pressures (if need be), give the car a check up and so forth. On a final note, you should use 2WD on bitumen or grippy surfaces to avoid wind-up which can destroy your transmission (though some jeeps have a center diff / clutch to avoid this - still not recommended as there is no real point to using 4wd on-road).

Yes it is supposed to have one. Any one that told you it did not come with one is a moron. All new cars made since 1976 should have one. Now, unless the thing has been removed by someone in the past is a mystery. But it happens. Just do not get caught removing one unless the Jeep has been modified for off road use only. Now if your state requires emissions testing it would be wise to have it checked. But get a second opinion. Those things are not cheap and a cheap one from Auto Zone will not work as well as the original one.
Only under the advice of a exhaust specialist should you replace one.

In regards to your question - no, your jeep would not have had a cadilac converter. However, all vehicles built from at least 1995 onwards should have been required to have catalitic converter as part of the emission control/exhaust system. To be completely certain you should call up your local dealership or go to a reputable auto parts store and purchase a specs manual for your jeep. Also, if you still have the original owners manual it should say in there.

It is actually called a catalytic converter. Does the fuel guage say "Unleaded Fuel Only?" If so, it has a catalytic converter. Or at least it came from the factory with one.
