I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and treated with levothroid. A lot of my symptoms disapeared but i use to weight 145 and ballooned up 10lbs in a month. I havn't been eating a huge amount and normally i don't gain that much in a month so it's worrying me that my meds are being counterproductive when it comes to my metabolism. Can thyroid meds actually make you gain and does it go away after months or the medicine adjusted?

Yes. I won't tell you what I weigh now but it's MORE than a 10 lb weight gain. It has never came off and I fluctuate up and down about 5 pounds from there. If you were just diagnosed it may take a year to get your meds right. Tell your doctor about the weight gain and any other symptoms you are having the next time you go in for your THS test. They might put you on a higher dose.

It's not the thyroid meds themselves that are causing the weight gain. It's most likely that you are undermedicated. When you aren't on enough thyroid medication, weight gain will happen. You should test the thyroid levels only in the morning, for a afternoon test may get your doctor to undermedicate you. Also, for most, the TSH should be around 1.0 in the morning.

Thyroid medication shouldn't make you gain weight if it is at the correct dose but many people seem to have the same complaint as you do.

Some people have more trouble sleeping on thyroid medication, lack of proper sleep can cause weight gain.

Also your thyroid is readjusting it hormone output to the hormones you are taking, your doctor should be giving you another blood test soon to see if you are at the proper dose. You could have hypothyroidism at your current dose.

My advice would be to be proactive on your treatment and to be patient, it may take a while to get yourself at the right dose.

Thyroid hormones generally cause lean muscle mass so your weight may rise but it should not be due to fat.The gain should stabilize very shortly after the med is adjusted.Thyoid only speeds metabolism it does not slow it down

The levothyroid should make your metabolism start working faster so you burn more calories. Have you been eating the same or has your diet changed? Are you exercising the same as you were? If you haven't changed your eating and exercise habits you would do well to ask your physician what might be going on.
