I'm trying to understand why so many speeding tickets are given to individuals. Is going 80 in a 70 really all that dangerous? Is going 50 in a 40 all that bad? Depending on the conditions of the road is it dangerous but in many situations it is not.
From what I've seen the biggest cause of accidents is tailgating. I would like to see more tickets given for this and back off the speeding tickets. Just take a drive down the road and there is a 85% chance you will spot more than one person tailgating another.
Here is another good one. How many of you come to acomplete stop at every single stop sign you encounter? There is a good chance that you roll through a sign here or there because you can clearly see that traffic is clear and you can proceed. A lot of these signs can be replaced by yield signs and most traffic engineers would agree.
What do you guys think?

In America speeding is made out to be this really dangerous thing and in some cases it really is. I had the pleasure of driving in Germany two years ago and it was the best driving experience I had ever have. There was no speed limits on the freeway (well some areas do but they are losely enforced by conditions). While I agree that traveling faster does make your stopping time shorter if the roads are clear you shouldn't have to stop. I am not saying that all areas should have losely enforced speed limits since I a strong believer that residential areas should never be more than 25mph and curvy roads are dangerous to speed around since you cannot see clearly ahead. I think the "speed limit is the limit" is crazy in a lot of areas since they do not follow the 80th percentile rule where the posted limit is based on 80 percent of the traffic travling down that road. In another case in Germany they have yeild signs for pedestrians.
Lack of drivers training leads to accidents...

That is why I said driving can be dangerous...but often it is not. Lack of drivers training is the major cause of most accidents on road. The whole system is a joke...I don't even think kids should be allowed to drive alone until they are 18. They can't smoke or drink legally but somehow they are allowed to operate a machine that can be really hazardous on the same roads as everyone else. The next time someone pulls up statistics and blurs about how I know nothing about the subject perhaps you should look at Germanys record where there are less accidents per mile driven and a lot of their freeways DO NOT have speed limits.

How about slowing down to conserve energy? Give that a thought. I agree however that if everyone went the speed limit, we would be embroiled in gridlock. Surely you can rotate the days you feel like speeding. You don't have to speed everyday, do you?
If I am on a lightly used road and come across a stop sign...I might roll through it. If I get a ticket for that, too bad for me.

Its called a limit for a reason. When you got your drivers license you agreed to abide by the rules of the road.
The rules said, do not go over a set limit, and if you do that you get punished. Pretty easy huh.
If your mother said be home by 12 and you walked in at 1210 did she not punish you? That was the limit.
Tailgating is actually illegal too.
As for the "stop and roll" again another rule. Just abide by the rules and you won't have issues.

Speeding not dangerous? Before spouting about something you know nothing about, take some time and research on the NHTSA web site. Consider the following:
Since the start of the Iraq war there have been approximately 3000 American soldiers killed.
In that same time, there have been about 175000 Americans killed in traffic crashes in the US. 35% or about 60000 due to speed and alcohol.
Traffic crashes are the number one killer of Americans ages 16-25.
However, we never hear about these numbers on the 6 o'clock news. I guess we wouldn't want reality to interfere with the left wing liberal ideals and the Bush Bashing that is currently the topic of the media.

The legislators created the laws. If the police don't enforce them, then the laws stop having meaning.
I don't agree with speeding tickets. If you don't have any accidents, then you shouldn't be punished. If you have an accident or cause injury, then the speeding should serve as an aggravating factor and make for a harsher punishment.
Punish people for what they actually do, not what might happen. But then, I'm also a big proponent of people taking personal responsibility for the lives and choices.

The LAW is the LAW.
Here is a question, since you are asking why not, it's only ten miles over the limit, right, so what other laws would you and everyone else do away with???? Would their be any laws left? Probably not, so only complete lawlessness would occur. Great Idea....let's keep the laws, and if you do break them, you pay the fine or do the time. It works better that way.
