Ohhh boy.
Background information usually works
- Where they grew up
- What school they went to
- Family/siblings
And offer your own anecdotes too, so he can tell his OWN stories
Ask about what they have done in the past in terms of their life - hobbies, organizations/clubs they're into...
Sooo many things. Conversation shouldn't be forced, if the chemistry is there, it sparks like fireworks...

Discuss each likes and dislikes or talk about the Discovery Channel. That usually brings out some interesting conversation.

Ask about their interests, music, hobbies, movies etc. Try to stay away from work unless they want to talk about it.

you could talk about what you talk about:
you might ask in your own words....
"what do we talk about"?
("what kind of things do we always talk about"?)
"what don't we talk about"?
(what subjects do we avoid?)
"what don't we ever talk about that we could talk about"?
(what don't we ever talk about that you would like to talk about?)
