It may be a silly question but I was just reading someone's answer about how a dog won't wander off as much. We have a black lab who is a very good dog but will take off sometimes. He is 7, is that too old? Thanks.

Yes it is, I neutered my 7 year old German Shepherd after he finished his championship last year. He is fine, he is healthy, and most important, I don't have to worry about him and my females being together. Or my house being destroyed because he wants to get to the girls when they are in season

This may calm your dog down a bit but its definitley no guarantee especially since the dog is older and has developed habits that are very had to break at this point. My lab and alot of labs I know love to run and if you dont give them enough exercise they will take off. My lab never actually stopped taking off until he was about 7 or 8 and I got him neutered at a year old! And I think he only slowed down as he got older because of his hips. Good luck.

Don't rely on desexing a dog to change its behaviour. Unless of course it is hormonally induced. I would definitely get your male dog desexed more for health reasons.

Did you know you male dog goes into a high risk category for Prostate problems? the older they are if they undesexed. I am talking Prostate Cancer. Only Boy dogs have a prostate at it is at BIG risk of having troubles with it if you do not have him desexed. I have seen countless amount of old dogs that have there testicles still that have all sorts of trouble because they are undesexed.
So before he gets to much older and then becomes an anaesthetic risk you should definitely get him done now/

7 is not to old, as long as your dog is in good health..but it won't stop him from wandering off. Once they establish a pattern it usually sticks with them.. but it may be worth a try. It just may work with him.

I don't think that neutering him would make him stop running off. some animals just like to get out once in awhile i had a neutered male cat that ran away from home time to time but he would come back in 2-3days. And i had a non neutered male German shepherd that stayed around the house

Never too old to neuter a dog. He will be just as happy as ever but no aggressive behavior and won't want to wanter as much that is true.

No, he is not too old, as long as he is normally healthy. The only possible danger is the anesthesia. The vet may want to do a blood test to test the dog's liver to make sure he will tolerate the anesthesia well. It will be well worth it to have this done.

And why wasn't the dog neutered 7 years ago??

Yes, it's fine to neuter a 7-year old and will absolutely solve the wandering problem. Plus, he won't be creating any unwanted puppiues during his wanderings, which is the most important reason.

A healthy dog can be spayed or neutered at any age.

There is no such thing as "too old" to neuter. Aging is not a disease. As long as your dog is in good health, there is no reason not to neuter him. In fact, neutering him will lessen his chances of developing prostate problems later in life, as well as eliminate the chance of developing testicular cancer.
