OK, ALL of these people are wrong. Although you will have to do 4 years of service as your minimum, the Navy has a enlistment program called the NATIONAL CALL TO SERVICE. With this enlistment program you are required to go to boot camp as usual, then go to the "A" school for the rate that you choose THEN you serve the first 2 years on active duty and do the last 2 years as a drilling reservist. A drilling reservist means that you drill one weekend a month at the closest reserve base near your home and then 2 weeks out of the year you are required to go do something more real like go out on a ship for two weeks or get more specialized training in a place like Norfolk or San Diego. The Navy will fly you wherever they need you for those two weeks. Your total obligated serviceis still 8 years just like it would be for someone on regular active duty. For those last 4 years of your obligated service you will be in the IRR (inactive ready reserve).

So your answer is 2 years active duty with a boot camp and "A" school requirement plus 2 years of drilling reserve for the National Call to Service enlistiment program.

If you are going active - 4 years if you are wanting to be in the Navy reserve, you can sign for as little as 2 years which would include your basic training.

ALL contracts are for 8 years, although there is a program Called national call to service where you only serve 15 months of Active duty after your training, followed by a mandatory 24 months in the reserves.

But that program is going away, and the fields arew very limited.

The minimum service obligation for anyone in any branch, is eight years (governed by federal law). The trick is to find the program that allows you to split the time between active duty and reserve time most effectively for you. The Navy's National Call to Service (NCS) program allows you to enlist in certain ratings (specialties) wherein you will complete boot camp (2 months), "A" School (where you learn your rating) (about 2 months), then do 15 months of active duty time upon completion of "A" School. After that, you are required to do 24 months (2 years) of Ready Reserve (that's the one in which you serve one weekend a month and two weeks every year). Upon completion of your Ready Reserve time, you finish out with inactive reserve time, which means that you are subject to call-back in the event of war or national emergency.

i think its 2 years active 2 years reserve and4 inactive reserve. All military members sign up for 8 years, and normally everybody does 4 active and 4 inactive reserve. you can also do 4 years reserve and 4 inactive reserve or 6 year reserve and 2 inactive reserve.
