It was all the rage back in the 12th century but it seems to have fallen out of favor. Somehow being cremated doesn't have the same kick as 20ft stack of burning wood and oil. Don't even get me started on how much those damn coffins cost me to transport across my river.

i'd love a Viking style funeral. Bury me in my Austin A60 with my valuables (and plenty of drink to take with me to Valhalla)

Well I plan on being cremated. But i supposed if i was gonna have a funeral pyre, i'd do the kind where they would float my body out on a raft of wood and oil onto a body of water and set it on fire using arrows, with flowers floating all around me.

I am of Viking decent and have a great amount of respect for the burial tradition. I do, however, disagree with the belief of the wife and/or wives sacrificing themselves going along for the ride on the ship hit with arrows of fire. The dedication is highly respected and commendable, but defeats the purpose of self-preservation. In a population of small numbers, the woman need to be preserved in order to pro-create, so that our people may live on. We also chose to do this form of burial, along with many others'--such as the Native American Indian--to prevent necrophiliacs & demons from "raping our souls".

Yes, even dying is a business now. Sad. I want to be wrapped in a cloth and buried/burned. Something inexpensive. Money could be used for better things than to make the local mortuary alot of dough.

I'd go for the pyre, sure.

Oh I full well intend to have a a Viking ship funeral, regardless of whether it is legal or not. (Hopefully I can have it done legally.) I want my body to be placed on a small ship and have flaming arrows set it ablaze out in the sea.

Someone recently did this in my state, went to a remote part of the coastline...by the time anyone realized what was going on, it was too late to stop it. :-)

Since I don't think it is a good idea for dead corpses to own property (like they essentially do in graveyards around the world), I would prefer for my corpse to be burned than buried.

I don't think the whole "20 ft. stack of burning wood and oil" is really necessary though. I'm not that extravagant.

Actually, it wasn't just the Vikings.. my ancestors, the Celts, used funeral pyres, and hindus use them as well.

I plan to go out like my ancestors :)

It probably cost too much to stack the wood today.

I'd love it. I don't want a simple cremation, and I refuse to be pumped full of chemicals and buried.

I would do it. I want a memorable last impression of me.
