The pentagon was built in that shape for a very simple practical reason.

With the building in this shape a person can walk to any other part of the building in a few minutes.

Blutimus ... Well, they knew they needed a big building, but they also knew that people at one end of the building would sometimes need to get to the opposite end. The 5-sided design allowed for best use of the space and permitted relatively easy access for all the building's occupants.

I knew the building was built in near-record time, but I didn't realize until now that the ground-breaking ceremony was on September 11, 1941, sixty years to the day, prior to the September 11th attack.

seems like a Lot of wrong answers so far so how about mine, its because that's the shape of some castle/fortresses, you can protect 5 walls ez, u can protect 2 walls from one corner and then run a short distance to the next corner to protect the other wall. besides its closer to being a circle than a square and a circle has more volume than a square.[ there what do you think of that]?
