You are dead right ! I work and live with asians in sth east asia. They are still fundamentally tribal and have more cultural values by far. The white man has lost the tribal ethic. Sold out basically. You should go to visit Laos and meet with some Lao / Thai tribes. They are amazing and are how people should really be instead of lost in a mad corporate hell world of self centred dillusions. Asian people are altogether more spiritually focussed and have retained many good family values. They are also far more polite and less crude than westerners. You should definitely vist Isan Province in NE Thailand and Laos across the Maekong river. It will awaken you I assure you !

If I understand your question correctly, the difference is cultural. Respect for the elderly is much more common in most Asian cultures. The family unit, including extended family, is more highly valued in these cultures, as well.

I've read they've had some problems in Japan in the last generation, with the older generations considering their children are becoming too "Westernized" and losing that respect for age and family.

I agree with Mr. Happy who knows our culture in Thailand and, I think, there is also the issue of gratitude, deep respect and ancestral obligation in which we have witnessed and practiced for generations. I mean it's our responsibility to take care of our father, mother, or possibly the grandfathers and grandmothers to live well and happily as much as they can. It is definitely one of our ways regarding doing what we can in return for their limitless kindness, generosity and trouble since we were little children and now we can be someone working in government services or business enterprises with our impressive salary. Therefore, those who deny taking care of them are blamed or dishonored from the community or our relatives. I'm sorry I can't propose any ideas or solutions on white people, however, my Australian lady professor enjoys taking care of her Japanese mother, just imagine how great she and her husband are doing to the old lady.

I don't think that's always true. I know lots of white families that get along fine.

Incidentally, I think I've somehow landed in the British Yahoo Answers. And I have trouble understanding what you've written.

I get along with my family, I see my grandparents all the time and I love them to bits. My cousins range between four months and thirty seven so there's a bit of a generation gap there!

And I hope you don't actually talk the way you write do you?

your right matey, when a white brit gets successful he changes, leaves his own people squats with strangers just coz there rich, the asians help their kin get them shops ect. admited the gov hate white brits and in the early days kept business methods secret from the working class, but not from the asians.
